After watching me completely suck this week (and me getting a little frustrated by it) - my guitar teacher pointed me to the blues for some fun.

Usually we only play metal, and well, it is usually stuff I own - so I can play along.

I figure if Im going to play it, I should listen to it a little as well.

Where to start??

I had to learn to play blue a little while ago and it will really help will you improv and general soloing. I would say learn the pentatonic in all 5 postions first, then listen to some one like John Lee Hooker to get a feel for the style of the music.

1: learn the shuffle.
2: play it.
3: get someone else to play it.
4: Improvise over it in an insanely simple pentatonic scale.

that's the blues!

I remember when that song was really popular and they'd play it in cosmic bowling all the time...

...

I don't know if there's such thing as cosmic bowling anywhere but Arizona...basically bowling with glow in the dark balls and shitty music.

Listen to a ton of blues to get a feel for the tone, touch and phrasing. Then practice improvising over blues rhytms. Try to play simple, memorable melodies instead of aimlessly shredding up and down on the pentatonic box patterns.

You don't have to limit yourself to pentatonics either. When you get a feel for the pentatonic stuff you can experiment with different scales and outside playing techniques for flavor.

Studying blues guitar did wonders for my lead playing. I still suck at lead guitar, though.

Blues rhythm guitar is also a lot of fun. There's a lot more to it than the basic 12-bar shuffle.

We have that over here too. We don't call it cosmic bowling tho.

I would suggest Janis Joplin(earlier), John Lee Hooker, Stevie Ray Vaughan, amd Blind Willie Johnson. These are all very good musicians.

Ha ha, I went cosmic bowling with my temple's youth group back when I lived in Phoenix. I remember very distinctly the video for "Barbie Girl" being played on these big screens they alley had. (Man...that was a long time ago.)

Roine Stolt - Wall Street Voodoo.

This album is an absolute must. Roine Stolt from The Flower Kings does a double album of bluesy jams. One of my favorite guitarists. Ever.

Thanks for all the suggestions...

I picked up some Stevie Ray Vaughan. Solid stuff.

In terms of actually playing.. the 12 bar is fine and good... looking for an Mp3 jam track of it to solo over. I found a couple of limited quality. Anyone have a good site they could recommend or one they could upload for me??
