A while ago, in the Hatebreeder forum, I called that album the best album in metal history, INSTRUMENTALLY. I've never seen a better guitar work, killer riffs, amazing keys, in any other album.

Well, some called me a newbie, some said that I was wrong, that Hatebreeder is overrated, overhyped, "don't write in this forum again", etc. Fine.

I would LOVE to be wrong ... and since I'm not the owner of truth and my intention in this board is to know more and more great stuff , please tell me what albums top COB's Hatebreeder in terms of guitar/keys work. If you claim to know A LOT, just name five and I'm gonna check'em out.

Thanks.

Wintersun is the first thing that came to mind.

of course, no one will be surprised when I mention any record by Sonata Arctica.... the guitars might not be as technically accomplished (but still damn good), but Jani and Henrik have a much better sense of melody.

I'll assume you mean metal albums

Arsis - A Celebration of Guilt
Necrophagist - Epitaph
Nevermore - any of them?
Death - pretty much anything after Human

i'm too lazy to think of more

ugh, that Wintersun is keyboard overload, is like Warmen with balls or something. Not my thing at all.

CoB are technically the most impressive metal band I've seen live. I saw them right after Sonata Artica and I have to say they blew them away instrumentally speaking. (And musically, but mainly because SA's mix was terrible)

I'd agree with Wintersun and Necrophagist. I wouldn't agree with Death or Nevermore.

Megadeth with Marty Friedman has the best metal solos I've ever heard on record, although I'm not a guitarist so I wouldn't like to judge in terms of raw technique. Other mentions go to Dream Theater (duh) and for drumming Mastodon or perhaps Ephel Duath.

I was there too, Bodom owned that night. But i seen Sonata again since then and there were great without all the tech issues.

You must be talking about Tornado Of Souls' solo .. or maybe Hangar 18, right? Those could be the best metal solos ever, yes. But I think Hatebreeder not only has godlike solos in ALL songs, it has godlike rithm sections, interludes, etc.

Looking forward to check Wintersun out ...

Tornado of Souls specifically, yes, but every solo of his is gold. I think Countdown to Extinction is a really great album, and 80% of the reason for that is the awesomeness of the solos.

Yeah, Wintersun are an awesome band, no doubt.

I was there all alone but sitting next to Edenbridge's singer

Like a twat I had to catch a bus so I left before Needled 24/7

I've just downloaded their first album and gave it a few spins.

It's very good, thanks for the tip, I'll keep an eye on them.

But I still think Hatebreeder is better. I don't think it's crazy to think that, just look at Hatebreeder's scores and Wintersun's, Hatebreeder got 3 100's and one 97. So if thinking Hatebreeder's better is crazy, guess I'm not the only one

One thing I have to admit, Wintersun's debut is a lot better than COB's Something Wild. So there's potential there, maybe their second could be even better. Death and the Healing is AWESOME, they have killer melodies here and there, but there are times the drum goes too fast to the point it becomes annoying. And I think Hatebreeder has a lot more catchy riffs spread throughout the songs than Wintersun's. Not only catchy, but heavy and melodic as hell.

Anyway, thanks for the tip, I loved it. Gonna check other bands mentioned here now.

I prefer Hatbreeder to, tis an excellent album. Be sure to check out Ensiferum, its Jari, the guy behind wintersun's old band.
