Dark Tranquillity are way better off without them. =\

You lose at life.

yeah that was a bit of an overstatement since DT use keyboards a bit better than other bands. I still prefered them without keys though.

I think I've said it before, but what the hell? I'll say it again.

It depends on the type of Metal. I'm making vast generalizations here but...

Gothic Metal + Keyboards = A match made in heaven

Thrash + Keyboards = teh sux

However, I have to agree with some people. An overabundance of cheesy $10 K-Mart synths can end up making the song really suck, but overall, keyboards are pretty cool.

I bet you'd change your mind if you listened to Psychopathology Orchestra...

I would like to hear more Jan Hammer-style synth solos in metal.

You dirty bastard. Keyboards and metal are a fantastic combo. They add such an atmospheric element (or a nintendo element in HORSE the band's case) and I love em.

I like them when they add atmosphere or make the band sound weird/spacey (best example I can think of is Arcturus), but bands like Dream Theater (+ their 20000 clones) or Dark Tranquillity are way better off without them. Maybe I'm just that way for keyboards the way people are with bagpipes =\

I play in a bagpipe band.

Keyboeards add another dimension to the music and can create more variations and add interesting aspects, but as said they can make the music lose it's heavy straightforward feel so the whole thing starts to fumble and gets gay.

Try Symphony X for metal with keys thats still has that accurate heavy feel.
