Yeah, whenever I see a black guy in a rock/metal band it's kind of like "That's weird..." It's basically mandatory for African-Americans (or wherever) to listen to rap/hip-hop...

I actually tend to shake my head more at those who listen to System of a Down or Slipknot and think it's heavy stuff than at people who listen to rap, radio rock, or even emo. I'm not sure why, though...maybe because I know what it's like to be that kind of idiot (I never liked Slipknot, although I used to be a big fan of SOAD). Anyone else the same?

I absolutely hate it when people are like "I used to be a big fan of [insert band]" like that was somehow a bad thing. You know, why turn your back on music? It's great to mature as a listener and like other things, but for me, if I like something today, I'll like it tomorrow and the day after that, and the day after that, and so on. I still love Def Leppard, Slaughter, Ratt, Cinderella and countless other 80's bands! Even when I broadened by musical horizons I never turned my back on those bands. What's the point?

And System Of A Down are an amazing band. Heavy indeed.

All right, well I worded myself wrongly in a lot of that...I meant people that think bands like SOAD and Slipknot are gods. Yeah, they are heavy bands, but in my opinion not that great...

And what you say about turning your back on music you once liked is true--to a certain extent. I liked System of a Down before I knew anything about music, before I had heard of even huge bands like Slayer or Megadeth. I liked them because that's what was on the radio, plain and simple...one day not too long ago, I was listening to Mezmerize on a long car trip, and I just couldn't keep them on play. I realized not too long after that (in my opinion) System of a Down are annoying as hell...not shitty, not untalented, just really annoying. Now I don't really like anything by them, except maybe Toxicity (the song).

The point is, I never really "liked" them...I listened to them because that was all I heard. Everything that I like now I don't expect to be bashing a year from now--I've found the music that I like, and I'm going to stick with it.

About only liking a specific genre of music:

Why I don't like many music genres:

For example: the latest "mainstream" bands are all stuck in the first half of the '90s. Their image, sound and simplistic forms of arranged sound. Music that is completely focused on one idea is not to my liking. That is my perspective. Why you ask? Music is a presentation of reality: emotions, colours, etc. Reality is complex, I can't feel complexity when I'm listening to a band that is simplistic. Music that is carefully crafted, genious arrangements is more my cup of tea. This is where my rock music (incl. metal) comes into play. I feel instantly if a band meets my high expectations. I don't think this is completely "subjective".

I don't listen to most mainstream bands because I don't like the idea behind it. And I'm pretty sure that I don't like the way things are going now.

The shitman

Most genres have their mainstream part, metal as well. I don't really listen to mainstream, like you, but I like a ton of genres more than metal for the reasons you mentioned.

Oooh, they're black. And they make up about 0.000000000000000000000000000001 % of the black population.

And NESS, I'd kick your ass. I'm still a wigger.

And the wink smiley looks like a wink smiley to me! Let us compare:

The eyebrow must make all the difference, huh?

There are lots of black metalheads! The guy from Suffocation, um...

And early SOAD always sounded like the Dead Kennedys to me.
