This has been a great year except the doom genre. I don't remember any good releases except Nortt - Ligfaerd.

Am I to take it then that you don't like the new Cult of Luna?

Hooray me neither!

(If you haven't heard it don't worry it's lame)

But as I mentioned before I like the new Place of Skulls for traditional doom, although it sounds way too clean at times. Great riffs, though, and good melodies.

Witch is pretty nice except the vocals. But it isn't very metal. Seriously I'm gonna write and put up a post it to the computer screen to remind me that I fucken love stonery stuff and have to listen to it more.

The new Cult of Luna isn't terrible but I liked their earlier shit much better. The Beyond remains my fave.

Daylight Dies you say? *myspace*

Not bad at all. I'll try to find the album and maybe it will enter my current top 1 (one) Doom Albums of 2006.

1- Nortt - Ligfaerd
2...
3.

And then there's Sahg but I haven't heard their album either.

Don't worry. I'll remind you, that you like the stonery stuff, from time to time.

There are/will be more good 2006 doom releases. Om - Conference of the Birds is quite nice (stoner doom in the vein of Sleep, but not quite as extraordinary). Also, I think Ocean Cheif - Tor seems promising (nice bluesy stoner doom). Check out this sample (first posted here by lizardtail a long time ago). Many people praises the new Cathedral as well. I haven't heard that one myself yet, but it might be good. The Celestiial (funeral doom) album that was reviewed here some time ago, also sounds interesting, but I haven't found a place to pick it up yet.

New Cathedral? The Garden... was 2005, I hope you're not talking about that one.

this year has been a bit disappointing for me compared to the great recent years, but these are my highlights so far:

Bloodbound - Nosferatu - probably my album of the year
Beyond Fear - s/t - Hardly flawless but Ripper can really sing
Animal - Violent New Breed - Sounds like W.A.S.P. but actually better than their last few albums! Big surprise.
Persuader - When Eden Burns - Solid aggressive power metal from my hometown. Rockin'.

Really? For me it's been one of the best in recent memory.

So you're from Umea, eh? Whatever happened to the hardcore band Doughnuts? Ever heard of them? I know they broke up, but I'd hoped those chicks would resurface some day.

I've been trying to get into many of the critically acclaimed albums this year but for some reason many of them just don't suit my personal taste very well. Been getting into some classic albums instead, like the entire Queensrÿche catalogue. I've been listening to Operation:Mindcrime for years but it wasn't until the release of O:M2 that I really started to look at their other albums and man they are spectacular.

I've never heard of Doughnut so I'm afraid I can't tell you anything new except that I have not seen them around any Umeå-related events that I've been to in the last few years.

Well this Ocean Chief sample is nice, and I'll keep an eye out for that OM album.

QR are indeed a great band (I even like the post-Promised Land stuff). Rage For Order is my favorite, though. A stunning album from start to finish.

Their last album came out in 1996, I never heard a peep from them after. They were quite unique in terms of hardcore. First, they were comprised of 5 teenage girls. Second, they incorporated a lot of metal and melody in their songs, and were kind of eerie in a Fear Of God/Dawn Robinson way vocally. They were damn unique and they remain on of the best hardcore bands I've ever heard. Check them out (I encourage all to do so):

Pretty good stuff. I found their name listed under "R.I.P." on the Umeå Hardcore website so I guess they are gone for good, but supposedly some of them are still active in music.

Umeå once had a big hardcore scene with close connections to the vegan/straight edge movements, but it all more or less collapsed in the late 90's (about the time I became a metal fan) and I've never been that into hardcore so I'm afraid that's about all I know.

*sorry for going off topic*

Umea had a badass scene for hardcore back in the 90s! Lots of bands doing the hardcore thing a bit differently. Purusam were from Umea, right? What's this website you're talking about?

Looks like an 80s industrial album.

Katatonia - The Great Cold Distance
Daylight Dies - Dismantling Devotion
Theatre of Tragedy - Storm
Tool - 10,000 Days

Live - Songs from black mountain
Jeff Martin - Exile and the Kingdom
Wolfmother - Wolfmother

I'm adding
KIUAS - REFORMATION
to my 2006 metal list.

I absolutely love that album and the song "The new chapter"
is definately a highlight that deserves a "Kick ASS" mention!

http://www.umeahardcore.com/ It's in Swedish though, but it's more or less a calendar for hardcore related events in Umeå.

The band list I found is from the same site but a different host so it's probably dated, but if ya wanna take a look go ahead.

To be honest, I've only bought one album which came out this year, that being Tool's brilliant 10000 Days, and I wouldn't call them metal. Looking forward to Mastodon's new one though.
