edit: "We don't attract wimps, cause we're too loud" Manowar - Kings of Metal

wtfpwn!

Wise old men don't listen to metal because once upon a time, when they were wise young men and formed their tastes (and mindset about the same), they were not exposed to such profound material as we are today.

Or maybe they just don't like it.. Tastes have little to do with wisdom.

It's just a little provocation of my side, boys ;) no need to make philosophies about it :lol:

I couldn't let that provocation go to waste. You know I like your old wise man music. A lot.

Unfortunately, my tastes have not too much in common with those of the old wise men :(

@Noodles

Yes, pretty much...

Eveyone seem to be talking as if Classical music is no more. People are still making it you know.

Hehe, I noticed that too, that's why a remark like "Metal is the modern music genre that comes closest to classical music" is so ridiculous :D

Contemporary classical sucks balls. Atonality has no place in classical.

Yeah, too much dissonance and silence, not enough good.

There are still people making classical music the way it was. I'll have to ask my dad for some composers but he's asleep atm. But as i said, its not a dead genre.

As far as modern music goes post-rock reminds me the most of classical, followed closely by prog and avant garde. The only time I heard classical in metal is when it has elements of post rock, prog or avant garde OR when its the dumb cheesy orchestrated stuff or neoclassical guitar soloing. When more than 90% of the genre falls into the exact same verse/chorus structure I don't think you can say its very close to classical... and even stuff that doesn't is still usually just riff following riff and then ending ad nauseum.

So name me some music that is more emotional than metal. And has good compositions.

Pretty much any King Cimson instrumental fits into that category... or just listen to Isildurs Bane - Mind Vol.1 or Kronos Quartet - Black Angels.

Everyone skipped the last things i said :cry:

Anyway arent king crimson lumped in with metal anyway?

And emperorblackdoom, i <3 you :P

I meant genres that have surfaced in the last 100 years. Was metal around in beethovens time? NO. Classical was, so its not a modern genre, but an evolution of an old genre, smartass.

Atonality is just one part, I don't really like it either, but that doesn't mean it's bad.

@following the reaper

A hundred years you say? Well then, how about the minimalists? Phillip Glass, Steve Reich, John Adams etc. All compositions in chamber music or for orchestras. Even Operas. If you say modern music, there is little chance you don't mean music that comes out these days.

The more music I listen to, the more I realise how much there is left out there.

I have a choice - I could either go on listening to thrash/death and black, which is mostly the same thing being repeated, or I can branch out and listen to other things. I choose the latter - I've gone from thrash to rap to electronica in the past week alone, listening to one genre for too long gets boring. I think people who just listen to metal are like those who just listen to whatever's on the radio, out of habit, and because it fixes an itch. Real music fans, like what Ken was saying, hunt down new stuff, even if it isn't automatically their tastes.

And metalheads have an in-built elitism (dare I call it musical fascism?) that keeps them close-minded. You don't find that in post-rock...

You'd like the Vladimir Delay, I think. Much calmer. Try the Boards Of Canada, EN and Apparat as well. And Amon Tobin did the soundtrack for the Splinter Cell game, quite film-soundtracky, and very good. Worth checking out.

Is it Vladislav Delay you mean?? My friend likes these guys and says he'll lend me an album next time hes round. I heard Boards Of Canada, I don't dislike it but there isn't much to keep me listening. I'll have to find the other three some time, their on my check out list.
