Oh and let me just say that Vivaldi, Mozart, Bach and Bethoveen are the greatest composers of all time and there is no discussion on that whatsoever!

What about Bartók, Stravinsky, Shostakovich, Reich, Adams, Glass, Chopin, Lobos etc etc?

Some style of music you can't even pronounce which is therefore > metal.

So name me some music that is more emotional than metal. And has good compositions.

I don't know, because I don't know all music. I know a lot of music that is closer though, common, most metal is not even composed! It's closer to rock than to anything else.

A crap load of metal is composed and a lot of metal is like classical music. Listen to Adagio, Malmsteen, At Vance, Stratovarius, Virgin Steele, Bodom (I had a dream I saw them last night), or a huuuge list of others. They are composers (insert "more like posers joke"... lame) and were not only influenced by classical musicians, but also compose some of there own.

Er, its the evoution of rock. And most weird stuff is lumped in with metal anyway.

And i didnt mean across all genres.

And i mostly meant in terms of emotional response.

Yes, Mystic Forest has classical elements, but Darkestrah doesn't have them, it's Armenian folk!

For post-rock, yes, it's closer to classical music than metal, at least it's not 90% verse-chorus.

There are quite some metal bands that take elements from the cheesiest of classical music, that's not being classical music, that's copy pasting some into rock based music. A lot of electronic, instrumental, avant-garde and jazz genres go a lot further, they may use different instruments and ways, but they build up their music the way the composers did.

And then I'm not even talking about modern composition and neoclassical music.

Look at some of the more technical/progressive stuff; Death, Necrophagist, Dream Theater, Agnra... how can you say they are not composers. Or even more orchestral stuff like X Japan or Symphony X. I know I'm just listing a slew of bands, but they play complex music influenced heavily from classical music.

Even some black metal, like Wolves in the Throne Room, Wyrd, Mystic Forest, Winds, Borknagar, ARCTURUS!!! have a classical-like composition and feel.

To add to the pm, Warmen as well do it.

Isnt Nargaroths Rasluka based a classical picece?

What if i put it this way - No other genre of modern music can elicit such emotion as metal, and no other modern genre has artists with as much musical skill as metal musicians do.

Darkestrah can make me almost cry. Can post rock or rap or jazz do that? Not for me it cant.

Im talking about a feel here more than anything. Also, the way metal ranges from epic to incredibly depressed and sad amazes me.

Avant-garde jazz artists noddling away on a sax in some smoky club playing classical-inspired "compositions", which are frankly boring as fuck, is not my thing.

Sometimes inspiration makes up for a lack of 'composition'.

"Donny you're out of your element!!" Since when does classical music not have a chorus? Sure lyrics are usually absent, but there is still a chorus. And no, neo-classical is not copy past. Those genres you listed off have similarities, but are in a league of there own (horrible movie). Neo-classical is modern classical music. They obviously used a classical music influence.

Common, just if it's complex doesn't mean it's classical. I agree on some one or two you mentioned earlier (although Malmsteen is not metal), but if those are so close to classical then so is André Rieu  I didn't say no metal has classical elements, but it's just not a genre that is generally very close to classical music.

Who's that?

Classical elements written and composed into music. Those classical elements are the main focus of their song writing, which makes metal very close to classical music.

Repetitio of elements does not equal verse chorus structures that we hear in pop-music. It is a form of verse chorus though, but the one that you hear in metal all the time is remiscent from rock and punk, so indirectly from classical music.
@ the last three sentences: I don't understand what you're trying to say.

Not all metal has verse chorus structures. Yes, 90% of metal is sucky verse chorus shit, but thats not the stuff most ppl here would be interested in :)

I dont see any verse-chorus structures in Burzum. I do see structures, but not repetitive pop-styled stuff.

Also, other genres are not as inspired by philosophers (ie - Nietschze) and philosphy as metal.

What else deals with beliefs and philosophies in life, religion, politics, etc like metal?

Never mind. Even if those bands are so close to classical music, there's fifty bands to every one of them that have nothing to do with classical music (a solo here and there is not classical music) and that Ken likes. There is a lot of rock music as well that has bands like the ones you mentioned, and ten times more jazz.
