They're cool, although I assume someone here would find them goofy or something.

Forest of Fog
Ulver
Nile
Drudkh
Agalloch
Dark Tranquility
Nevermore

On that list, I can agree to liking:
Ulver
Nile
Agalloch
Dark Tranquillity
Nevermore

FoF and Drudkh aren't my kind of thing. :)

Show me the mutant who doesn't like Nevermore and I'll, err, show you a freaky little mutant. :)

off the remaining list I like:

Nile
Dark Tranquillity
Nevermore

but i haven't heard Ulver or Agalloch so i'll go check out some samples right now.

EDIT: i listened to a couple of samples from Ulver (all from Bergtatt) and they were awsome, so add them to my list, and Agalloch, judging from the samples, wasn't really my thing.

Dude, buy Bergtatt and Nattens Madrigal at least. Seriously, they are some of the best BM releases ever. And in my opinion, pretty easy to get into if you dont listen too much black metal. NM is like raw as fuck, but not in a 'necro', horrible production with thin buzzing guitars and no drums way.

DI, Mythological Occult Metal, is it good as an intro to Absu?

Most loved bm band by far has to be Ulver.

Short list: Drudkh, Forest of Fog, Burzum, (I assume) Emperor, Enslaved and Taake could make it?

Was there any samples by Agalloch from their latest album Ashes against the grain? Something tells me you would like them, although it's fine if ya don't since we are looking for the ONE band to please us all.

all of the samples i listened to were off 'Pale Folklore', and I was using the samples on www.last.fm and they didn't have any off their newest album, but if you have a site that does, then i'll have a look at their new material.

That means I'm too much of a n00b to have even listened to those bands.

Their myspace has one song from the latest album called Falling Snow. Really great song.

Then feel joy, as you will soon explore some top bands in metal.
Neveremore has some samples at their webpage. The quality might be questionable, but at least it gives a hint. I would suggest you pick up This Godless Endeavor.

For Agalloch, see my previous post with an URL to some samples.

Dark Tranquillity also have a myspacewith some songs to listen to. The best album to begin with if your getting one would probably be Damage done.

I assumed as much. Such a high number gave me pause, since it came from you, being a black metal guru and all. You would know better than me.

I dunno if 85% is too much, Skarty's the guru, but as far as I know there are indeed a lot more than we know of. I've read some interviews and, well, it's too easy to make racist comments for misanthropes. I'm not sure if they mean them or are just saying it to look more evil.

I'd be wiiling to wager that 90% of BM bands put on an act. I bet they just sit in their houses all day, drinking tea and knitting grim sweaters.

Add Windir, Haggard, Therion, Agalloch and Insomnium and I'm on the same page as you are.

Blut Aus Nord?

Oh and let me just say that Vivaldi, Mozart, Bach and Bethoveen are the greatest composers of all time and there is no discussion on that whatsoever!

Wagner, and I believe Kathaarian mentioned Orff somewhere else.

"If someone doesn't like Judas Priest, some heads are gonna roll." -Scepter.

Same goes for Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden, Saxon, Led Zeppelin and some others that i can't remember in this state of drunkness.

Sorry to dissapoint you, but Judas, Sabbath and Led Zeppelin are way too boring for me. And sadly Iron Maiden is already ruled out.
