I am not sure if they are black metal or not (on their site they say they are death/black), but Rotting Christ doesn't use paint and they sound great. But don't expect to find many BM bands that sound as good as them.

The comment about BM being below the surface was not anyone "shitting all over your collection"; I think that you misconstrued the intention of that comment; at any rate, you are free to express why your favorite genre is that, and what it represents to you and let the fray commence.

In my view, black metal is one of the best forms of music which also stands for certain things. Some of black metal's message is excellent, the respect for nature and the past ways, while offering an alternative to mainstream Christianity. Other aspects of black metal's message (NS) are stupid, namely stupid racial and ethnic stereotypes. I listen to some NS black metal anyway. I'm not one of those people that tells you that you have to agree with the message of what you listen to.

What makes the music of BM so great is the long compositions that have nothing in common with popular music. The atmosphere can be oppressive, the riffs can mesmerize. Thrash and death metal tend to be more set in the conventions of popular music, which is why I don't like it as much. Doom metal is another genre I love because it strays from what is the popular conception of a "song" and a chorus. Now, I enjoy all forms of metal, but black and doom are the most suited to me. I'm tired of people shitting on other people's musical tastes, because it's all just a matter of perception. If you think you are "deeper" or smarter than somebody else because of what music you listen to, keep it to yourself because in reality there is no way of knowing. Maybe the music you (or I) love is actually shit? Who cares? It's a futile exercise. WiC's slamming of black metal is as meaningless as my attack on early 80s heavy metal. Pissing matches can be fun, but don't we post on metal boards to share our favorite music with others and discover new bands?

Well HoW, corpsepaint is more of a tradition than a code; it's kind of "war paint"; when the warriors went to fight they wore the paint to help them intimidate the enemy, stay focused and to remember themselves their roots traditions, pride etc...

There are many Black Metal bands that don't use corpsepaint all of the time; many BM bands use it only on stage and some others always use it, I believe it's something left to each BMetaler's discretion.

No corpsepaint here, but live they use.

Mayhem has members who use it, and some that don't.

There are several Darkthrone (probably the purest BM band) pics without corpsepaint.

One of the coolest non-corpsepainted BM pics ever.

See, even the purets most famous bands don't use corpsepaint as a rule, yet, corpsepaint is something fuckin' awesome.
