Post subject: Where Would You Place These Bands?
PostPosted: Fri Jul 21, 2006 7:50 am
I'm just now getting around to unpacking my CDs and placing them on shelves (I moved in December). I've constantly gone through the boxes so I've fucked up my alphabetization and now I have a bunch of metalcore (and the like) albums that I can't figure out where to place, hardcore or metal? Here's the list:

100 Demons
A Perfect Murder
Between The Buried And Me
Bleeding Through
By Night
Cipher System
Caliban
Chimaira
December
Heaven Shall Burn
Hourcast
Misery Signals
Scars Of Tomorrow
Stampin' Ground
Still Remains
Twelve Tribes

Where would you put them? And please, if you don't like them shut up. I'm not asking whether they should go in the trash bin or not. Would you put them in the metal section or the hardcore section or maybe like a misc. metal section? What should I do?

Also, what about these bands:

Ministry
Mudvayne
Mushroomhead
Slipknot
Skinlab

I can't figure out where to put them, either. HELP!!!

Here's my take, I'm not using the nu metal thing as an insult, just an opinion as to where they fit.

Ministry = Industrial
Mudvayne = Proggy Nu metal
Mushroomhead - Proggy / industrial Nu metal
Slipknot = Nu metal if it's the first album, no idea about the other two.

Stampin Ground ist Krieg. Which album(s) you got?

Well, see, I have my collection separated like this:

Metal
Rock
Punk/Hardcore
Chick Music (Sarah McLachlan, Tori Amos, etc.)
Rap (very small section)
Alternative/Nu-Metal/Pretty much everything else

See, in a band like Mudvayne, yeah, they're not strictly metal, but they do have a lot of metal bits. The same with Ministry. And then bands like Stampin' Ground started out more hardcore than metal, but are now more metal. Maybe I should create a metalcore section?

I have A New Darkness Upon Us, Allied Forces (Split w/North Side Kings) and Carved From Empty Words.

I'd create a metalcore section if I were you.

Mudvayne, mushroomhead and slipknot should go in the alternative / nu metal category. file ministry under metal I'd say. most of the bands you mentioned in the first batch would fit directly into your shiny new metalcore shelf.

Red is metal. Green is hardcore.

Most seem to be hardcore. Why not just stick EVERYTHING in alphabetically, that's what I do.

Mudvayne, Slipknot, and Mushroomhead should go in the trash.

I had it like that before, but when I'm in a metal mood and I have to scan 5,000 CDs I don't want them all seperated. It's a pain in the ass.

It would be too much for me. Metal there, rock there. Still, maybe when I've as many CDs as you...

The used cd store.[/smart-assery]

Mudvayne, Mushroomhead and Slipknot all go under nu-metal (believe me, I've been having this argument about Mushroomhead with a friend of mine for about six months, and I'm still right).

I concur with Al in that it's probably worth it to create a metalcore shelf. I'm assuming it would be bigger than your rap shelf, and it really is a separate genre.

Yeah, that what I'm feeling. It's those metal "moments" that are throwing me off. Haha.

Honestly, I don't have a huge metalcore collection, a lot less than I thought. Maybe 30 or 40 CDs, probably less.

30 or 40? I'd think that would warrant its own section.

Yeah, I think about that much. Now, though, where do I put Trivium and Shadows Fall? Definitely somewhat metalcore, but also there's a whole lot metal there. Metalcore?

It's great owning a lot of albums, but it's a pain. Haha.

I'd put Shadows Fall under metal, but Trivium is absolutely metalcore.

Seriously? What's the difference between the two bands today? Not a whole lot in my eyes.
