Lady singers, for the ignorant. Who do you like?

Fiona Apple
Tara McLean (thumbs up, Ken)
Norah Jones
Bjork
Sarah McLacklan (sp)
Vanessa Carlton
Lisa Gerrard
Jarboe
Missy Higgins
Emilie Simon (thumbs up, Stefan)

Don't like Joni Mitchell particularly. Ani Difranco's taking time, but she's growing on me. Any more I should be getting into?

Tori Amos maybe? I think she's pretty good, my gf's obsessed with her so I hear a lot of her stuff. Same with KT Tunstall although she's not as good.

I like some of the singers on your list, and I'd echo Tori Amos.

I'd also suggest Beth Horton, and perhaps Portishead considering the exclusive use of a female singer.

Didn't my SYL review inspire you to check out Bif Naked? Not my thing, but I've heard good things from people whose it is.

I think I said

which should be a hint.

And yes, Baz, forgot Joss Stone. Bit over-commercial, but great voice.

Wow. Those of you that like Ambient, check out Carla Bozulich. Creepy sound effects and a country/western voice, veeeeeeeeery effective stuff. The backing band's made of members of Godspeed You! Black Emperor, A Silver Mount Zion and Black Ox Orkestar. Brilliant stuff, everyone should be checking this.

And Ken, I'm expecting some more names from you...
