...or was average, or was anything but one of the greatest guitarists alive (edit: to ever be alive):

EAT SHIT...
AND DIE...
AND BURN IN A MORGUE FIRE.

Those are two videos from a clinic he did, the last is him at 16 years old. Sure, he looks like a tard, but it was also 1982, and he was already tearing it up on stage better than 99% of the guitarists out there today!!

Dime was the fucking man! To deny his guitar skills should be an automatic banning!!

The guy can use the wammy bar pretty dam well but to be concidered one of the greatest guitarist (I asume you meant ever!) he would have to be original, which the guy clearly was not. And for that reason it didn't really impress me, lots of hammer ons and pull offs and strange effects don't make him a guitar legend.

Ugh...you can't change history, son. His amazing soloing is only a part of it. The guy was 100% original, there is no other guitarist out there that sounds like him or played like him. Yes, he is a fucking legend.

Hes only a 'legend' for the same reason kirk Cobane is. Like i said lots of hammer ons and pull offs and strange effects don't make him a guitar legend. And i hear lots of randy roads in his guitar work. In fact i'm sure some of the last solo was taken from randy. And not to meantion Eddie van halen. The guy was not original. A great guitarist but not a legend by a long shot.

I won't deny he was good, but no one should be claiming he was better than Trey Azagthoth, for example.

Kurt Cobain is one of the greatest songwriters to ever live! Are you saying Dime is a legend because he died? We you born in 2004 or something? I have a feeling this is going to turn into a flamewar! Hahaha.

Throwing out the words "hammer-ons" and "pull-offs" is stupid, that's extremely basic and every guitarist does it. No one sounded like Dimebag, not Rhoads, not Halen, no one. He was completely unique, he could shred like no other and he was a killer fucking songwriter. The dude has been a legend since the mid-90s!! To come out now and shit on his technique is retarded. The man is a fucking legend. You can't do what he did in those clips and 99% of other guitarists out there can't do it either. The man was flawless!

Who did that? Still, there is a difference:

Q. You know who Dimebag Darrell is?
A. Hells yeah!

Q. You know who Trey Azagthoth is?
A. Uh...was he the guy from Phish?

Sorry, Ken, but I have to strongly disagree with you there. The mass notion of Kurt Cobain being some type of "musical genius, legend, etc." is horseshit.
Kurt Cobain was a burntout junkie with a distortion pedal; his lyrics were not that deep or meaningful, and his talent was not very apparent. Yes, he OD'd, but that is not tragic, considering he shot up a brick of smack a day. That does not make him a poet.

Popularity definitley should be the determining factor to how good someone is. Clearly.

Everything you just said was in response to nothing I said.

Never said that either.

The guy is definately good,
but how does one become a legend?

first I think determining who is a legend or not is subjective.
second how do you come about determining who's a legend or not?
I guess popularity has to be one of the criteria's unfortunately, otherwise how do you become a legend if not many people know about you ? Skills are obviously required, but then again evaluating skills is subjective to each.

Conclusion: this is an endless debate, but Dimebag is obviously an outstanding guitarist.
