You're saying they should be on a list of top 10 metal bands of all time? o.....k
Yeah, my top 5 would probably be:

1. King Crimson
2. The Dillinger Escape Plan
3. Meshuggah/Cynic/Atheist/Death
4. Neurosis
5. Judas Priest (Devin Townsend + Arsis like them)

They've all done more for the metal I care about than any of the crappy mainstream stuff.

my list for top hundred metal bands would be very short

1-99: Sonata Arctica
100: Queensrÿche

(can anyone tell I'm a fanboy?)

I'm surprised MTV even knows what the term "Heavy Metal" is.

Death I can see and Judas Priest pwns all. The rest might be on your list of favorites but not a list of greatest Metal bands of all time.

Nah, I can't stand most of King Crimson's stuff but they invented the style of music I care about.

But see, it's a question that doesn't even deserve a response because the bands/musicians they've influenced is countless!! You think I'm going to start naming bands to prove my point? I don't need to! It's fact, music history proven countless times! Do I need to somehow prove that Metallica are one of the greatest metal bands of all time? Absolutely not! They proved that 20 years ago! A question like that doesn't deserve a reply. It's just fact.

I know some of you are young and I hate to throw that out there, but it matters. In the 80's I didn't trash Sabbath and Zeppelin, you know? I don't like Zeppelin, I never really have, but I know their place in history and I will never argue it. Shit, I barely like Maiden. They've never really done it for me, but will you ever see me question their contributions to the metal world, their influence on other bands or the quality of their music? Absolutely not. It just doesn't do it for me like other bands. It doesn't mean they suck.

ALL GAY!!! Now dont get me wrong, Pantera are ok, but an ok band that influences many bands is not TEH GREATEZT EVAH!!!!!! cos it can only spawn mediocre bands.

When i was younger, Pantera were one of my favourite bands. I was around 17-18 at the time. I never considered them thrash, or anything else, just US heavy metal. Still to this day i just think they are just US heavy metal.
Thing is they did pave the way for the "new breed" of metal bands born in the 90's, which has sporned off into so many different genres now.
One thing i will say about Pantera: they were one of the bands that helped bring metal back from the brink in the early-mid 90's, after the grunge genre almost took over. 80's hair metal was a dying breed and there was nothing fresh. Enter the grunge era.
Pantera and a handful of other metal bands gave something new to the metal scene and the metal heart started beating again.

Some may hate Pantera, which is fine, but they were one of the bands to bring metal back after it looked it could be devoured by the new grunge/alternative scene.

Pantera may not be one of my fav bands around now, but i still spin their albums from time to time.

What the hell are you on about? I don't think Pantera chose what bands they had an influence on. Nor should that detract from their place in Metal history.

And that has anything to do with what I posted how? I don't like a lot of bands, but it doesn't make them unimportant to the Metal landscape. I think Helloween is TEH SUCK, but I don't say they aren't a worthy band. And Dimbag's improvised solos during a concert were something to behold.

Just cos they didnt know how they would influence ppl doesnt make them important. Could metal exist without them? Yep, there would be no nu-metal. So what.

It's not just nu-metal Pantera influenced. Everything from groove metal, through metalcore, even some modern death metal took from it.
