This may be true, Stu (lawl, humour). A lot of 'core-lookng bands are turning to shitty would-be tech death. I saw a crew of them the other week. They were shite, but their haircuts were emmaculate.

+1

This makes me a sad pandasaurus. :(

Its gonna be death metal, power metal might have a couple of big acts but look at the way metalcore is going, these bands are getting heavier all the time. And all the kids really like stuff like CC. Its a matter of time before death metal becomes the new metalcore/nu metal.

OH IS IT FUCKING NOW?

*cracks hideously small knuckles and tries to look intimidating*

*unmoved by bastards attempts at intimidation, stu mugs the nearest emo kid and steals his Job for a cowboy, and Canible Corps CDs and throws them at Bastard*

YES IT FUCKING IS!!!

*emo kid beats crap out of Stu, then Bastard*

Have your...your...*sniff*Cds back...

I've been warning people against this for quite some time. Dragonforce and Edguy will unmake all this is good about metal. Somehow I told ya so seems totally appropriate.

I might be the only one, but I'd love to see power metal and black metal become mainstream. It seems to me like that might get us back into the era of the 80's...at least here in America, where glam metal ruled. Obviously I'm not saying I want a bunch of glam metal back, but if you listen to power metal...everyone knows there's a fine line between the two. There's one reason that the music would become mainstream...PEOPLE LIKE IT. Bands like Metallica, Megadeth, Guns & Roses, and others ruled metal in the past...and in my opinion we haven't seen a movement like that since them in the metal scene. I would welcome power metal into mainstream mainly because I want everyone to have the chance to be exposed to that kind of music. It's a shame that MTV and channels like that only cater to certain types. If there were channels that devoted times to showing every kind of music they could find I think the world would be a better place. That doesn't mean I like rap or emo music or anything like that, but all music should be given the same opportunity to rule the world. It should be up to the listener to decide what style they like the best.

My main point is that it's hard to find good music sometimes because it's not promoted correctly. If Dragonforce becomes huge...then so be it...they will rock with many many fans

I am utterly baffled. How in the fuck does that video end up on ANY show that is aired by MTV in 2006?? What is going on here? Are major labels looking to exploit power metal now like they recently did with stoner rock?

Looks like it. Cellador was on MTV2 as well.

Retarded! You know what that means, right? Think about it: Jet, The Darkness, The [Stupid Names], those kinds of bands that always pop up when the mainstream media tries to force feed consumers a new brand of anything, there are going to be power metal bands like this if this is a trend. I'm sad inside. :(

but Ken you like commerical shit.........

and Sonata Arctica is fucking awesome. of all the Fairy flower metal bands they fucking own.

I like good music, I don't care if it's mainstream, underground or somewhere in between. What I don't like is the implications of this. When this happens, like with metalcore, you have some killer bands out there, but they're buried by all those bands that labels sign to make a quick buck! How many metalcore bands follow that paint-by-number approach and just release boring music? THOUSANDS! And we miss out on bands that are actually very good within the genre because of it. The music industry has changed since metal ruled the airwaves. Back then there was a measure of care when it came to the music, the money was obviously number one on the agenda, but it's different today. They don't want good, they don't want great, they want something that can ride the currents of whatever trend they're pushing. Once it loses altitude they toss it.

If power metal is the next genre the corporate suits are looking to exploit we're going to have to sift through countless bands that flat out suck in order to get to the good bands. Moreover, most people won't have the patience to do that and the genre will become a parody of itself because of these shitty bands being thrust under the spotlight with advertising and marketing blitzes that tell everyone the band is excellent! Power metal will be associated with mediocrity and eventually drift off into utter obscurity and even the great bands will have problems selling albums and getting record deals. That's just how it goes. It will be great that some bands get noticed, but it'll be short-lived and very bad for the genre overall.

How many people here claimed the new Avenged Sevenfold was power metal?

But if we're correct in our thinking this sort of music will become power metal, just like The Darkness became 80's rock and Jet became 70's rock and The Strokes became 60's rock. In the end, neither was an accurate description.

Black metal ain't getting popular anytime soon, despite what Satyr does. If black metal were truely to get popular it would have happened in the late 90s. Death metal could get popular if enough American core bands rip it off over and over again like with melodic death. That would be a sad day. :(

Yeah, 3 Inches of Blood (fake fuckers) and kno w Dragonforce. You know what, I don't get it though, there are tons of bands like Dragonforce, why are they like the Hot Topic ticket? I don't care, I hope they make a ton of money and shit, they are ok just not my thing (and kinda gay) but I don't get it.

Why them and not Edguy?

Because by some miracle of nature, the teens of today are even dumber than you.

Media tells them what to like, they proceed to claim it as the new messiah. Look at all the fake emo kids around that claim to love bleeding through and taking back sunday. *vomits*

I am an old guy. Aren't you a teen of today? Dragonforce is pretty fucking gay dude....You have to admit it.

Well if people go around claiming bullshit like Avenged Sevenfold is PM I can't help that.

I will do like I always do, find shit I like and buy it. I am too old to care about trends anyways.

You could always by good HM in the 80's despite the crap that was being pushed as it. It won't change anything.

Edguy is pure so is Dragonforce like them or not so I don't get how they can "ruin" metal. They are no worse then the 1000th Darkthrone copycat band or the 1000th "brutal death band".........

People just get jealous cos they actually make money at it.

I think we've had this coming for a while. Bands like Avenged 7x and Trivium made guitar solos popular, bands like As I lay Dying made technical stuff popular, the mainstream lovers accepted it and loved it and now the media patrons are smelling the money cos they found out that metal has more of it and they are looking to exploit it. We're doomed I tell you.

Dragonforce has a really mainstream appeal. I noticed that when I was playing some and a bunch of my super mainstream friends came over, and they loved it. They're gonna get popular and people are going to start hearing them, and we just have to hope that they don't dumb down their music like so many other bands that gain popularity. I don't want to be sitting around in 5 years saying "Oh yeah I like old dragonforce, but not their new stuff."

Hmm, this is interesting. Yes, I agree, I would DM or PM to not fall into this cycle of mainstream media, yet I accept that it is inevitable. Many of the Metal bands local to me are Death or Metalcore, some with elements of Grind. All of the male members of these bands have short hair(the majority), wear tight pants, and most are devout Christians, and express this faith in/with their music.
It is rather inevitable that mainstream media will soon trespass onto Metal territory, and what will result will be the same legion of puppets and slaves that will then claim allegiance to this type of music, until it moves onto another. It is an incessant cycle.

As Ken said, the risk with metal become mainstream is that it might degenerate because mainstream audiences don't care about the music quality, just about being 'in'. There should be something like MMTV (Metal MTV) that makes it a point to play good metal to appeal to a wider metal fanbase. Sadly, I only see dark times if metal is to be commercialized. However, we could all start listening to classical music and worshiping Glenn Gould, saying how great his Goldberg Variations are...

Dude, it is just the 80's all over again. you are like what? 16? Just your turn and this Dragonforce stuff is just like WASP in the 80's cool band, same with TS. There will be tons of crap (Hell all the old school thrash freak like Holy Terror forget that almost all 80's thrash was major label and the rest nobody heard of until the advent of the internet). The best HM will float to the top.

Shit, Priest, fucking Iron Maiden, they are all commercial as fuck and sold a ton of albums, nobody shits on them. The bullshit and trends will pass in a few years like it always does and only the true will be left. Don't freak, it isn't the end of an era or anything... It just means us NA's will get to see some good Euro Power Metal live.
