imo most metal is pretty lame, but all of my favourite albums are metal albums, except for The Mars Volta, who totally owned that trend.

Hitler misunderstood Nietzsche's philosophy in the first place so if you approve it you do not necessarily approve Hitler's ideals..

there aren't enough bands like Meshuggah who are willing to try to acccomplish something new with their sound by writing more ambitious music. I know more bands are capable of it, because even Chimaira wrote a good 12 minute instrumental, but most bands just don't even try.

The only subgenre that you get bands consistenly ambitious enough to try to write interesting songs is in 'prog' metal, and even then they are all doing the same keyboard filled, Pink Floydy melodramatic crap that I really couldn't care less for.

Me neither, I think we are just getting spoiled from all high quality metal over the past years. You can't expect everyone to outdo themselves and play something completely original.

Yeah, while most bands were rotting in stagnation, Chimaira came and wrote a 12 min epic instrumental and changed the world.

Fucking faggot.

Did Chimaira really just come up in a "What leads us to listen to metal" conversation? What's the world coming to? :?

I didn't mean it that way, I meant that even a crappy band like Chimaira can write good music.

I guess what I was trying to say was that 90%+ of metal bores me because its all just varying quality of pretty much exactly the same stuff.

I'm going to press you on this point since you didn't respond the first time. Doom metal and some variations of black metal strike me as filled with many ambitious bands. I guess you disagree...

There are a ton of things that make metal my main musical interest. But mainly I suppose I could say it is, or at least started with, the riffs. I was all about the guitar playing in the stuff I listened to before I discovered metal, so imagine how much more enthralled I was when they were kicked up to such a level. Then Bolt Thrower introduced me to extreme metal, and I listened to them for the riffs, after which the vocals grew on me, and so on from there.

I'm with you on that. I've said this before, but if you find that Metal is stagnant and there are no bands doing new things, you're just not looking hard enough.

Or are too comfortable in your "I know all the good stuff" mindset.

Right, noodles?

what makes me listen to metal is often the sphere it creates. Many metalgenres make me feel things other genres can not. PM makes me want to dress up like a knight and start decapitating random bearded men. HM makes me feel like jumping on a harley and hit the road etc. And many metal bands can give a certain emotion into a song, which is more you can say about the biggest part of today's popular music.

I understand what your saying and kind of agree. I also think that most metal is shit, you can spend a long time searching for bands and just find poor copycat bands or groups with hoplessly bad song writing. Yet its worth it when you find that one good band in 20 that is totally fucking amazing.

I think it is unfair to expect most or even many metal bands to be very good. There are always just a few greats that stand out to pretty much everyone and then you have the genre specific greats. Compared to every other type of music there are more great, good and listen-worthy bands in metal than anything else. Also its harder to get exposed to new metal. You have to search it out because it is not brought to you like pop, rap and emo and even metalcore to some extent.
