Opeth were one of the first metal bands that I heard, but I didn't really like them until I heard some other death metal, now I think they're just OK because Maudlin of the Well kick their ass.

I've been made fun of so many times by my friends from high school. I used to hang out with them a lot and when I pulled into their driveway blaring something out of my car they would be like "Yeah Satan rules, kill people!!" in response to death metal and "Are you listening to 80's music? Yeah Poison!!" to power metal. Then I'd be like "Hey how many DUI's do you have" or "Hey what’s that around your ankle?" or "Hey, why are you single and living at home with your parents while you don't have a job?" or "Wow, you guys are really going places partying with all these 17 year olds, looks like you guys are going to make IT!"

I hear ya on that one. People say I listen to "I hate people music." This one girl tried to convince me that my Operation Mindcrime shirt somehow had a neo-nazi symbol on it. People's ignorance really is staggering sometimes.

Yeah, she said the ryche on the end of queensryche was obviously referencing the Third Reich. I should have pointed out they aren't spelled the same, but oh well, might as well let the ignorant remain so. She was clearly beyond help.

What, Queensryche? They named themselves after the song "Queen of the Reich" on their debut EP. The chose to spell it the other way because they could.

So do we pronounce Queensryche as Queens Reich? I think I've been saying that wrong the whole time.

Reich is the German term for a state, or the government that rules it. Since WWII its become more used by English speaking people.

The song Queen of the Reich of course has nothing to do with Hitler's Third Reich.

Kathy, how have you been pronouncing Queensryche?

Kuiinsrich. Not that far from the correct one. I was saying it like it was Turkish.

Hmm Metal.

no, no thats not it.

METAAAAAAAAAAAAAAALLLLLLLLLLL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

yes thats better.

hmm I suppose I have no social problems, and no external factors that drive me to listen to metal.

1. Its just, WOW! The first metal song I heard was Arch Enemy's Enemy Within, and you all know how incredibly awesome the intro is. I heard that, and them bam! I was in!

2. One other reason is that metal is the closest thing to classical music. I love classical, but sometimes it just isn't heavy enough. Metal has the melodies, arrangements, and sensibilities that approximate classical music.

3. Metal is the last bastion of imagination in music. All other genres are 'real world' based, with themes like relationships, clubbing, war, and other disgusting real world stuff. Where else can you get music about dragons/demons/swords/destruction/etc.? Metal appeals to my mind and imagination. Stuff I used to imagine (and still do) when I was a kid. Its pure in the sense that its uncorrupted my the outside world.

4. The mental pictures metal gives me are second to none. Soaring over mountains, travelling through forests, bursting through clouds, epic battles, calm rivers, nature's beauty etc.

5. Metal has THE BEST melodies ever ever ever. Never have I heard such wonderful melodies, both obvious (e.g folk/viking/power/black metal) or hidden away (death/black metal).

6. Its heaviness gives a sense of purpose, a billion tonne concrete wall of conviction and confidence. I hereby propose that all national athems be metallised.

7. I suppose I am quite Nietzsche-ian, and metal encourages one to become the superman,to rise above all odds, and to never give up.

Metal rules.

@ point 7: Of course, Nietsche saw Hitler as the ideal Superman.... but don't let that deter you!

Without having read any replies in this thread i'm gonna post my thoughts...

In metal there is always a deggree of distortion, distortion indicates struggle, defiance...What do we defy? My theory there is that we once, a very long time ago when we were in our true form, were innocent beings. We were then born and raised and as we grew up we moved, or rather were moved, further and further away from our origin. Some people who were for some reason more sensitive to this change noticed the wrongness in the place they now found themselves in, and so they got angry, wanting to get back to the innocene that was taken from them so long ago. The kind of innocence and love you cannot find on this earthly plane, the one you could bathe in and the one that was pure, bottomless and unparalelled.

Some people were perhaps not taken so far from their natural, real state as others, or perhaps they were but they do not remember it, so they don't feel the urge to defy, to struggle and to fight the way true metalheads do.
