I would disagree with all of you... I recently got this album in a second-hand record store.... glad I didn't listen to you guys !

so what have we here ? METAL ! it mixes elements of thrash, classic heavy, nu & metalcore (metal being the main thing here) and does it pretty well...

the songs are good, guitar work is way above average, the rythm section is pretty good too and, honestly, I don't hear any huge vocal flaw except if you consider putting Nu & Hardcore elements in the vocals is a flaw... which I don't :D

Trivium is a good, honest hard working band and Ascendancy is a reflection of that... I'll give it 85/100 (as Ember to Inferno was a bit better, 90/100 for me)...

eh, i'm quite late to jump in the conversation, but I purchased this CD after hearing some comments about the band and after hearing "Dying in your arms"(love the lead guitar) for the first time. I got the version with 4 bonus tracks 2 being new songs, 1 being a cover of Metallica's Master of puppets and the video mix of Dying in Your Arms. After listening to this CD I agree with Emokid on most of what he said. First this band is mainly Metal, they have elements of Thrash, Death and Iron Maiden like Metal with some metalcore mixed in. The guitar playing is awesome, and even though some of the lead guitar playing are somewhat repetitive on songs like "Dying in Your arms" and "The Deceived", but they make them very catchy and gives them a little melancolic side making them quite enjoyable. In fact, The Decieved is my favorite tune from the CD, it also has a very high skilled solo.
I like the clean singing but the screaming parts need some work. the growling is ok though, that would be the only gripe I have about this CD. I've read a lot of negative comments recently about Trivium and I couldn't disagree more about most of them. Do yourselves a favour and listen to it before making up your opinion, I did and was pleasantly surprised.

I'd rate Ascendency 82%.

You bought onw of those '6 months later' Roadrunner re-releases? BLASPHEMY!!!

If I see the reissue in a used bin I'll pick it up. I don't really like the dudes screaming, sounds like he destroying his throat while having the flu, but I can dig on the music.

By the way, I think their cover of Master Of Puppets is killer. Listening to it showcases how good they could be if they'd just sing heavy and not scream.

lol, the best Metallica cover I ever heard is the Thing that should not be from Thy Sins of the Beloved. Violins rule.

I've passed on this band for the same reason I gave up on As I lay Dying....FUCKING CLEAN CHORUSES AGHHHHH! A shit ton of bands are doing this these days. The only band I've seen pull it off is Killswitch, because it feels legitimate and that guy can actually fucking sing and not sound like he fell out of a boy band. Otherwise, it feels like someone copy pasted the choruses from Linkin Park or Evanescense simply to expand the band's appeal.

I don't mind Trivium, they are incredibly average at everything. Maybe when the members age a little they'll make something great.

I actually kinda like their music, but throwing in the clean catchy singing where it doesn't belong just ruins it.

I actually think their clean vocals are better than the extreme ones.
I think the contrast of vocals fit pretty well with the music overall.
Then again, it's all a matter of taste.

Musically this band is pretty good the guitar work on this album is above average! the solos are pretty awesome.

I've listend to this album quite a bit lately and for some reason I keep going back to it, so they must be doing something right...

I'm tired of people who judge a band by the genre their thrown in.
I seriously don't give a crap if the genre is labelled "metalcore" or whatever label you want to give it as long it's good. And I don<t care if it is uncool for me to be listening to something like trivium.
People pay waaaaay to much attention to what people will think of them.

I think the guitar work is good, the drum work too, but the vocals really, really ruins this album for me. His clean vocals are decent but holy fuck his screams are fucking atrocious. I find songs like "Like Light to the Flies" hard to even sit through because of those godawful vocals.

This is the funniest and most factual comment i have heard anyone mention about these metalcore/wannebesome-metal bands I have ever heard. I agree entirely. These guys sound like kids. I mean no joke. If you ever hear 13 to 17 year olds sing while playing that is what these emo/core/meta-core bands for the most part sound like. I guess that is why they are popular with the high school crowd?
I will stick with my accented aged brethren thank you very much :)

i like clean vocals if they're used right. pretty much no metalcore bands do that though so yeah.

yeah, it isn't great, but you can tell the sound recording sucks barely hear the guitars and you mostly hear vocals and drums.

I own this CD and enjoy it :) Yeah yeah it's metalcore, but it's still done well. I've seen them live too though and I gotta say Heafy is damn lazy. He talked most of the vocals instead of screaming and whenever a high pitched clean part came he either did it down an octave or pointed the mic at the crowd so he wouldn't have to sing it.

I don't agree with the "metalcore" label because it's much more than that, it has melodeath influences, Heavy Metal influences and solos a la Iron Maiden.
