Chili Peppers caught stealin a Tom Petty song. I actually thought Dani California was one of the worst songs from Stadium Arcadium, so I dont really care. I will admit that there is a striking resemblance though. Wow.

Here is the article:

And the MP3 comparing the 2 songs side by side:
http://www.jared-morris.com/blog/petty.mp3

I've heard this already and the argument is stupid.

1. The riff is similar, but either way it's not the same and it's just a basic riff/chords. Similarities happen.

2. The drum beat is simple and standard, no mystery as to why it matches up there.

3. The bass line doesn't match up, for the most part, Flea's bass lines are far more intricate. The bass just intertwines and sounds the same because it's the bass so it's going to follow the drums, the basic beat will match up, but the Flea's bass line are all over the place compared to the standard and simple bass line on the Tom Petty song.

4. The vocals and melodies sound nothing alike.

5. There's no proof that RHCP even know this Petty song. I know it and never picked up on it.

6. RHCP don't need to rip off Tom Petty, this album has 27 other songs, at least 20 could be hit singles.

It's a coincidence. There are billions of songs out there, eventually every musician is going to write a song that sounds like another song. It's happens. RHCP don't need to steal from Tom Petty. Someone is making something out of nothing.

I agree with you, I listened to it a few more times and other than the guitars, it doesnt really match completely. I was just kinda shocked when I first heard it, to me on the initial listen, it did sound alot alike.

It does sound a lot alike, but that's a part of music. For instance, Wall Of Sleep's "Inside Garden" sounds like a Pearl Jam song and they're a doom metal band!

Never heard that one, which Pearl Jam song? I think its funny when songs sound alike. Well its funnier when it wasnt meant to be like that.

I remember that happened to the Rolling Stones as well. I only heard the chorus parts of each song but they sounded even more alike then this Petty/Pepper thing.

WALL OF SLEEP - INSIDE GARDEN

Nowhere near as similar as the RHCP/Petty song, but I hear a lot of "Evenflow" in this song.

You're right, it's got that groove to it. It could even be a Pearl Jam song (well, if the vocals were a little less fruity).

Yeah, haha, his vocals are definitely different, even for doom.

SoK, dont pick on a band you dont like just because something like this comes up.... im sure lots of BM bands have stolen from each other. There is a Mystic Forest song that sounds just like a Taake song. So what? :?

What's wrong with the song? I think it's ok. And it's your own fault for being mad at the radio. You should know better what's played on radio.

I think anything thats softer and cuts down on the funk and rap from these guys is better. The funny vocal patterns (hence why i find them rappish) and funked out guitar just put me of these dudes.

Soft and reflective RHCP pwn normal RHCP.

Nothing is wrong with the song, but I have no choice but to listen to the radio or silence for right now. "Dani California" is played on heavy rotation on about 20 channels right now. The other day it was on three channels at the same time.

Another weird thing is that "Been Caught Stealing" is always on, too!! WTF? That song is old. I don't get how some people can listen to the radio all the time. It's very sad.

Hahaha! We should ban radio from now on! Anyway, I basically haven't listened to any radio in months cos here in Malaysia, hip hop and all the retarded shit is popular and gets heavy rotation on radios and on TV as well. My radio in my car is purely dedicated to listening to all my cassettes which I collected back in my school days.

we should gather up a force of metalheads and lay siege to every non-metal radio HQ. And we can attack MTV too. I wanna chop of all their heads with a chainsaw.
