Some of my favourite death metal releases:

At The Gates - Slaughter of the Soul
Dismember - Indecent and Obscene
Bolt Thrower - War Master
Gorefest - False

You can see for some kind of reason I'm not very fond of american style death metal.

I would put my vote on Rusted Angel by Darkane, but seeing as that goes as Melodic Death I'd have to say Nightmares made flesh instead.

crikey!

suffocation- pierced from within and effigy of the forgotten are in my opinion the best death metal albums by far, and i don't think there will ever be another death metal album that even comes close to them.

i understand how some albums are ranked number one for some people but as much as i love behemoth and nile, how can you even put them as the best death metal albums compared to bands like suffocation, morbid angel, cannibal corpse, death and others?

idk, i love Morbid angel and suffocation. Im not a big fan of cannibal corpse but i have no reall beef with them other than there ridiculous song names.

untill i bought Demigod i would have said altars of madness but now the two fight back and forth for a place in my stereo

hey where in new hampshire do you live?

i dwell near Laconia. My town is called gilford and it sits on lake Winnepasauki

Cannibal Corpse is underrated in this site and overrated in some other sites.. I dont understand why people can't think in the "intermediate" way..
Cannibal Corpse deserve their credit for they were good and they are even better now.
Nile is a completely different style of death metal so it's stupid to compare.
Suffocation-Pierced from Within +Effigy of The forgotten+Human Waste=Masterpieces

well i think it makes sense. people love the band at first and if they get more into the genre, they lose there love of the band to something like Morbid angel. or they just become a bigger fans through buying the bands extensive discography.

As far as intense death metal goes, at least in my experience cannibal corpse is a sort of gate way band.

right now im really into behemoths Demigod. It is my only death metal-behemoth cd and i am basicly flored by it. Any of you guys have a sugestion of new behemoth albums to pick up?

Get the last 3 before Demigod. Zos Kia Cultus, Thelema 6 and Satanica.

My favourites right now are:
Behemoth - Demigod
Vital Remains - Dechristianize
Bloodbath - Nightmares made flesh
Dismember - Massive killing capacity
Death - Symbolic

This is a difficult question when you try and consider all the various types of Death Metal. Not to mention the fact that there is a shit ton of Death Metal out there and I have probably only scratched the surface of it. However I will list a few albums that have stood out to me as instantly classic.

Origin - Informis Infinitas Inhumanitas

Even if you sit down with a lyrics sheet you can still barely pick out all the words. This band has three guys doing vocals and it is complete fucking chaos. The music is a breed of technical death grind that just never lets up. Ever. The most intense album I have ever heard, beating out Cryptopsy because the production doesn't suck shit.

Decapitated - Winds of Creation

Many consider this the best record these guys ever did. While, I think the other albums have merit, this is definately an unflinchingly brutal compilation of songs, ending in what has to be one of the best Slayer covers ever.

Vital Remains - Dechristianize

Managing to be just as brutal as the other death heavy weights, Vital Remains succeeds in infusing a great deal of melody into this album, not to mention having one of the most memorable introduction tracks ever.

Cannibal Corpse - Kill

Say what you want about Cannibal Corpse, this album is the real dea. In the mindless lyrics and blasting simplicity lies the beauty. Raw, angry, senselss.

I have to admit you've got a point. Pandora's been chucking tracks from this at me most of the week, and it's a grower.

Heh most definately, it's the first CD I reach for when I am just plain old pissed off at work. It's easy to imagine slaughtering all of your customers when this is playing. :P

Hrmm we are going to have to factor in the more melodic death metal bands as well. Im going with:

Arsis - A Celebration of Guilt

The Black Dahlia Murder - Miasma
