Glad y'all like it. Quite funny for metalheads to like techno, good you're open minded people.
I think theres some bands that, even if it is part of another genre, has a lot of the stuff that metalheads look for in their music in it as well.
I think it's just a matter of what you're used to, and getting into another genre requires some effort. It's just a coincidence that most people here are into metal, they could have just as well be into *insert genre here*. What is a certainty is that they would have been into an non-mainstream genre either way, but which that would be is just a matter of influences from outside (your brother, a friend, a magazine, etc.). Being close-minded means that you stick to what you once chose or grew into, open-mindedness implies that are not afraid of other genres or getting into them. Selling out is starting to listen to Franz Ferdianand, Kathy ;)
imo, it's not openmindedness you describe here. it openminded elitism which is quite different... I'm open-minded and sometimes an elitist but I like easier musics too... Does that make me a sell-out ? I don't think so...
NP
Red Hot Chili Peppers "Stadium Arcadium" (sell-out music?)That was just for Kathy, note the wink ;)
well, if that was for Kathy....
dOOd ! there's so much more than BM in life

No shit, like what?

I don't know how you guys get the impression that I only listen to black metal, hasn't anyone looked at my lastfm? There's even King Crimson there for fucks sake!
but techno on the other hand is clubber music and clubber=sellout
The first step to open-mindedness is to cancel the word sell-out from your vocabulary. Roughly "sellout" means that a band doesn't play what they like but what the masses may like, right? So What? As long as
I like it, I care shit about how fucked up other listeners of the same music are. This sellout clamour reminds me of crying babies: "Muuummy .. this bad bad band plays music that is pleasing assholes, now I can't listen to them anymore, rähbäääähh!!" Remember, no one can tell you if music is good or not, except for
your sense of hearing.
Back to topic: Venetian Snares seriously skins ass! He really made it .. and did not sellout

we old men know better than that, don't we Jochen ?
indeed, sellout doesn't mean shit to me... but you've got to admit some music is made only for commercial purpose (girls and boys bands, some house & dance music, most modern r'n'b) and 99,99% of it sucks... is it selling out ? imo, it's just
NOT music...
as far as I'm concerned, I'll only label music what has been crafted by individuals actually caring about the stuff they're releasing...
and I still like 2 Britney Spears songs
and, on topic, Venetian Snares past works never really convinced me but, this one, oh mama!, is sweeeeeeeeeeet 8)
Sure, most music is made for commercial purposes, i.e. maximum sales is the goal. But someone who is satisfied with this kind of music must be out there. And isn't customer satisfaction the most critical success factor of any business? Quality is the satisfaction of customer demands, therefore being number one of the charts ist the best quality seal I can imagine for music, no matter how much the music sucks in my books.
Obviously we old men and most of the people who call themselfs metalheads (or classical music connoisseur or jazz aficionado) have a different understanding of quality but that doesn't mean it's better, it's just different. Elitism arises when we start to reject music
because 99% of the people listen to it or because we don't like the people who listen to it. (Remember that "Slipknot is not Metal because they are on MTV" post)
I like your statement: "imo, it's just
NOT music..."
Some well-educated person wrote: "just as music is whatever people choose to recognize as such, noise is whatever is recognized as disturbing, unpleasant, or both." So, you are right, 99,9% of the "commercial" stuff sucks, i.e. is unpleasant in my ears, and therefore is noise for me.
