Hey

I'm trying to get into the traditional gothic/black metal, as i have not really heard much before. I used to hate the really rough vocals, but it seems to be growing on me. Not too rough, but you can still just understand what the hell their saying.

Bands like Tristania, Trail Of Tears, Sirenia, Sins Of Thy Beloved, Eternal Tears Of Sorrow, Greyswan, and possibly dipping into the Cradle Of Filth: Nymphetamine sort of sound.

I've only heard a handful of songs from the first 3 bands i mentioned above. They seem pretty good.

The best songs suited to me would be clear/semi-rough male vocals with the angelic female vocals throughout. I'll give examples

Tristania: Woomwood, Shadowman, Circus, etc
Trail Of Tears: Liquid View, Driven Through, etc
Sirenia: Meridian, Sirenian Shores, etc

Could anyone compile a list of songs from these bands that would suit me, and list other bands which i could be interested in, please?

After Forever - My Pledge Of Allegiance...actually get the entire album Decipher. Don't bother with the new one Remagine until you've heard the first 2.

Silentium - Seducia...get that album, it's the best gothic album this year and exactly what you want.

Theater Of Tragedy - Aegis...you should find most of the songs here to your liking, it's the best by the Theaters.

Mortal Love - any of their 2 albums would do, although they don't have male vocals, only the angelic female ones. Very good stuff.

Beseech - this is obligatory with one of the best gothic album ever - Souls Highway. Not a bad song on that one, highly recommended.

Epica - I guess you've heard of them so you know what to expect. Consign To Oblivion is the better of the 2.

That's for the more known stuff, sorry I didn't list separate songs but those albums need to be listened fully and besides as I said most don't have weak songs, only killers. Enjoy.

Out of those, i have heard After Forever: Reimagine. Tad disappointed with that.
Yes, i have Epica's latest album. I have everything Beseech has released. I have TOT Aegis album, not bad, i was going to list them too but forgot.

The other two i will certainly check out. Thanks again.

Need more people to reply. ALthough i like the Epica, Beseech type stuff, i'd like to find heavier stuff...hmmm, more dark gothic, not sure what genre to put it in.

As were most people, that's why I listed Decipher because it's probably their best and quite heavy for this style.


I can tell you for sure that Seducia is very heavy at times and very atmospheric with soft melodies so don't expect a maelstrom of heavy sound as in Sirenia.

"Heavier stuff" is very relative when it comes to gothic metal. Being heavy is not the goal for most of the gothic bands so it will be hard to find such stuff...of course I'm hardly an expert.

Dark gothic...hm, i think Flowing Tears can be classified as dark gothic. Serpentine is their best but it sounds more like Lullacry, meaning very poppy. At least it's heavy.
I'll have to dig a little and refresh my memory about this type of music. I'll post anything interesting.

Listening to Mortal Love now. "Have Lost" album, song "existence"

Not bad, not sure about the female vocals...maybe its just that song.

Also listened to Silentium. "Seducia" album, song "hangman's lullaby". Not bad either

Flowing Tears is great. Listening to Razorbliss atm, very good

I have struggled to get into Consign to Oblivion. Something is just...lacking.

Does Battlelore apply?

Battlelore would fit in this group, but i already have their last 2 albums

Idk if you are only looking for bands with both male and female vocals, but if not.

Paradise Lost - Draconian Times

Great album.

Classic!

I have everything released by Paradise Lost, and i wasnt impressed with Draconian Times. About 2 good songs, the rest were average. Icon is much better IMO
