So that's where Chris has been! Will he be doing anything with the Artwork forum?

Good Review. I have not heard the album in it's entirety but judging from the 5 clips posted on their site this sounds like a great album. I heard a lot of similarities to Nevermore both musically and vocally. I personally like the new singer much better than Owens. I will definately be getting this one when it comes out.

This album is much better than "Girth". Overall though, it sounds alot like second rate Nevermore and nothing really grabs me.
69 / 100 for me.....

WTF this doesn't sound like Nevermore come on now.If anything it sounds like Sanctuary(Warrel Dane's previous band)then Nevermore.

Nevermore is much heavier and crunchier then this.

But anyone from the clips I heard I plan on getting this album it's very good melodic heavy metal.

I agree; this album has absolutely nothing in common with Nevermore!!

BTW, the label was selling this album for $7.99US last time I checked.

The vocals do sound like Nevermore...more so than Sanctuary, which were way higher...... The music might not be as crunchy but they seem to follow the same tempos and drum patterns as some of the Nevermore stuff, especially early albums.

This album might grow on me in time. I even hear a little but of Onward in this album, which also never quite grabbed me.

In all do honesty I can't hear the comparison.Warrel's voice in Nevermore is more an emoitional somber tone then the vocals on this album. He sounds much like Warrel in his Sanctuary days then in Warrel in Nevermore.

But that's just what I'm hearing.

I really like what I hear from those sound clips on MySpace...Good stuff. Well, I guess I'll have to pick this up too. Can't go wrong for 8 bucks.

If you want the $8 price, you'd better do it soon! The site says that the price will go up to $10.99 after March 15th, but their online store still has it for $7.99.

Reaaally nice, I always thought that Winter's Bane debut never quite got the recognition it deserved (prior to Ripper joining da priest that is). I don't really agree with the contra Powergod remarks though, I always thought that at least their second album was pretty solid.

Awesome CD. I liked this CD even more than you Mike and I was really hoping to review it next week but you already did so. I was always a fan of Heart Of A Killer due to not only Ripper, but also the amazing guitar playing in both the riffs and leads. The CDs released after that never really did anything for me, but this blew me away. I've listened to Catching The Sun about 25 times over the past week and the entire CD about 8 times, which is a lot for me in a short period of time.

I agree with Jeff that certain vocal passages and about two songs are similar to Nevermore but there are still stark differences and this is not a Nevermore copy band in my opinion. I think what Winter's Bane has done is combined modern US Metal (the non-metalcore variety) with more traditional US stuff (such as Seven Witches, as an example) and just made one awesome CD with great drumming, guitar playing, and vocals.

No filler, only killer. This is a great CD. Low 90's for me.

I definatetly hear Nevermore in the music and the vocals. I own every Nevermore album so I think I know their sound very well.

The clips I've heard are in no way a copy cat of Nevermore, I just hear the influece which is a good thing. Like Nevermore the riffs are very busy and original with odd time signitures. Maybe that is why I liked them so much........

Oh, I didn't noticed it was Chris' cover :) But to be honest I didn't like it to begin with :| It's just the style... Looks more like one of those Sonata Arctica covers. But now that I know I can notice the "Chris Sayian artificial appearance"™ applied to it which I truly dislike :?
But just to say something positive, that I don't get frowned upon, I do like some of the other stuff he has done. The Hubi Meisel, Astral Doors and Manticora covers are nice, and the Steel Prophet is quite ok too. But this one is a bit meh... Now that I think of it, it also reminds me a lot of the recent Iced Earth and D&W covers...

Glad I wasn't the only one...

What's up with the review guy making defaming comments about Powergod?!? You must have heard it with the wrong ear. No way is the band bad by any standards, the first two albums are well done solid metal with great vocals. It's only the 3rd album where they slightly lost it :( ...I haven't actually sank to it much yet, I should review it too.

Anyway take a listen to Children of lost horizons and Mean clean fighting machine from the debut, then Lost illusions and Temple of the forbidden eye from the second album and tell me it's not anything but kickass metal of the highest calibre!!? :x

I agree. the vocals are very unlike nevermore, in my opinion. But its still really cool! I just downloaded it and am listening to it right now. It's a very no-nonsense record.... and it kicks ass!!!!

I got the album and I love it. I would put it at number two as my early favorites so far this year, after only the new Pharaoh disc which is my number 1. I have heard the Nevermore comparisons many times, and to me the only song I can hear a Nevermore-like sound on is "Dead Faith". Other than that song, it sounds like Winters Bane to me.
