I miss Messiah on this one :?

but it's good indeed, maybe not a classic though...

Not a classic ? Are you out of your mind ?

no Kathy, i'm not 8)

I happen to consider Nightfall to be the only Candlemass album really deserving a classic status... most of their other material is very good though, but not classic (in my book).

I don't think Nightfall being better than this means this can't be a classic. This is one of the first ever doom albums and it is one of the reasons why it's called doom so it deserves a classic status. Period.

Absolutely correct. Nightfall is a classic as well, but without Epicus, there would be no doom. End of story.

I often find myself thinking the same thing. Granted, Messiah is a much better overall vocalist, but Lanquist's vocals fit just right for this album. I've heard Messiah sing some of these songs live, and its just not the same.

I agree that Nightfall and this one are their best. As far as "The Father of Doom Metal", that title should go to none other than Tony Iommi. Candlemass is so Sabbath influenced it's not even funny, but they are an incredible band none the less and one of my favorite Doom Metal bands. If anything, Candlemass was the "Black Sabbath" for the 90's.

Yes, you speak the truth. I guess I was referring to the term doom being specifically attributed to the title of this album. Also, I think Candlemass are not as similar to Black Sabbath as you imply. Are they influenced by them? Absolutely. Are they a carbon copy? Not at all. The extent of Black Sabbath's influence reaches much wider than doom in my eyes. In fact, donning Tony Iommi the "Father of Metal" would not be that bold of a statement.

isn't there a Hand of Doom song on Black Sabbath's Paranoid album ?

and Tony is, indeed, much more than just the father of Doom (he is that too btw...). 8)

Huuh. It's like this:

-I created this painting
-No you didn't because god created you thus this painting was created by god.

Candlemass : Father of Doom
Black Sabbath : Father of all Metal

What is doom? Is it purely BPM? If so, then both bands had songs that could be called doom. Candlemass certainly had a much much higher percentage, but all it takes is one song to define a style.

I referred to mista Edling as the father of modern doom metal to try and imply there was something before the modern version, IE Sabbath and their clones like St. Vitus, Count Raven, Trouble etc etc etc snu.. and even a lot of doomy NWOBHM happened while Candlemass were still in demo stage.

and if nothing else, Edling is clearly the father of epic doom, and that's no mean praise..

yep, doom can be hard to define. in part the key is to look for restrained performances, sombre moods, personal or fantasy-based lyrics, overwhelming use of minor or constrasting chords and melodic solos composed of relatively few notes.

Sabbath definetly have a lot doom songs, including the very first song on their first album, but it was Candlemass who stripped away the blues rock-out sections and replaced them with heavy oppressive sections to create a new sound. even so bands like Reverend Bizarre etc sound closer to Sabbath than Candlemass and I'm grateful for the variety..

edit - quoted the wrong thing derf derf
