Assuming you all listen to metal in one form or another, I'd like to hear the stories and situations which led each of you to favor metal over any other genre of music.

As for me, it started off as Linkin Park being my introduction to rock, and then I slowly progressed into Nu-metal (such as Nonpoint and Trapt), as well as some alternative like Incubus. Then the heavier stuff started to appeal to me, such as System of a Down, and I was hooked, for a while, until one day I got a CD called Summer of Metal. This CD contained tracks by 3 Inches of Blood, Killswitch Engage, Machine Head, Soulfly, Ill Niño, Chimaira and some other stuff, which may not have been so metal. But, the CD managed to fully engage me with Killswitch Engage (Heh, unintentional pun). I went out and bought the CD as fast as I could, and the other CD's that I found listed on my Summer of Metal album. Of course the only ones I now consider worth buying were 3 Inches of Blood, Killswitch, and Machine Head. So then, as my lust for metal progressed, I plainly searched in google for "Metal Reviews." My God, it was heaven. All the metal I could want.

Fin. Maybe not so interesting... oh well.

It was a mix of bands as follows (somewhat in chronological order):

Fear Factory, G//Z/R, Napalm Death, Slayer, Dream Theater, Dying Fetus, so on...

Def Leppard --> 80's Rock --> Run DMC --> 80's Rap --> Queensryche --> Pantera --> Similar Metal Bands --> Sarah McLachlan.

At around 18 years old I worked in a music store and we had this thing called the "i Station" or something like that, you could scan a CD barcode and sample the songs. Anyway, when no one was using it, it would play videos. One day I saw this chick on it, thought she was hot, put on the headphones and somehow I actually liked it. I was baffled. I bought (stole) her CDs from my store and loved them. It was very strange, but also exciting. Sarah McLachlan remains one of my all-time favorite artists. And she's still hot.

After that I was able to give everything an honest listen instead of just blowing a band off, assuming I won't like it. And here I am, listener of a million different bands, so goddamn annoying, eh?

By the way, Nonpoint are awesome!

Yeah, I still listen to Nonpoint every so often. The coolest thing I found about them was that they were from Ft. Lauderdale, a place only a few hours from my house.

80's Rock/Metal

Stratovarius brought me back to metal after a 7 year music buying slump.

They were originally called Nonpoint Factor and they were a thrash band! :shock:

:shock: That's new. I still enjoy their music though, be they thrash or no, especially when they combine tropical beats with heavy rock (I'm thinking Rabia). Their Phil Collins cover is also pretty sweet.

Yeah, this was in Puerto Rico before the relocated to Florida. The released one 6-track demo in 1992 called Dementia...Into Reality.

Trying to think back .. waaaay back to the first metal exposure.

I believe it was an attempt to be cool back in grade six. A group of people in my class were listening to stuff like Ozzy, Scorpions, Priest and Ted Nugent.. but Ozzy was definately the coolest. I remember someone lent me a tape of 'Speak of the Devil' and never had I seen anything so evil or rebellious in my life as a dude in fangs puking up some bat's head or whatever it was on the cover. I'm not even sure I understood what the music was about, but I did like it. I went on to purchase Bark at the Moon and an awesome compilation called Masters of Metal (vol 1 and 2)



I used to listen to this all the time.. I remember in particular loving 'Rainbow in the Dark' off this one, and 'Balls to the Wall' from vol.1 .. that sound part way through of some balls being crushed was quite traumatizing to my tender young ears!

EDIT: And I remember a song called 'Thunder in Rock' by Fist off Vol. 1 - now there was a kick ass tune.

My first intro to metal was hearing my older brother play thrash and death metal in his room next to mine. I hated it back then and remember thumping the wall telling him to turn that crap off....lol

Then one day while my bro was out, i grabbed one of his tapes and played it on my dads stereo system (which was the best system in the house at the time). I started to get hooked, the tape was Metallica's Master Of Puppets.

He also was into bands like Slayer, Megadeth, Hobbs Angel Of Death, Testament, AC/DC, Anthrax, etc. I listened to all of them and before you know it I was growing my hair long and dressing in flannel and wearing black t-shirts. I was a metalhead.

Once i started searching for more metal, i found bands like Fear Factory, Bio Hazard, Machine Head, Pantera, Sepultura, Life Of Agony, Out, etc.

Then once the internet came into my possession, i eventually did metal searches and came accross new genres of metal. Power, prog, symphonic. The first ever power metal i heard was Millennium by Stratovarius. And it went on from there till now.

My bro's fav music atm....drum 'n' bass :x

When I really started getting into "real" metal. In Flames - Cloud Connected, that song sparked a huge interest and it kind of branched from there.

my sister had some Judas Priest, AC/DC, Trust... that was the end of the 70's and I used to steal her records while she was away and enjoyed it while pretending to her face that it was awful music... there was also some Bob Marley, Police, Téléphone (french rock band) etc... I guess that helped me to always be open-minded.

Hahaha. That's funny. I have a friend who just 5 years ago was into metal, but now he listens to Magic 106.7! :shock:

Well it all started when I was a young alter boy and Father O'Grady wanted me to come over to his house one day...wait what are we talking about again?

I think the first metal album I heard was one of my brother, Deep Purple "Made in Japan", and I found the songs soooooo long (just like the non-long instrumental parts. But the rest of my brothers tapes were growing on me. The stuff that introduce me was, moreless, in a first wave Deep Purple "Perfect Strangers", Rush, Rainbow, AC/DC, Scorpions, UFO, MSG, and my old favourite band for a long time, Triumph. After that Maiden, Manowar, and, finally Metallica, Anthrax and Slayer.
My brother is not on metal more... Now he listen Radiohead, Bjork, and flamenco-tango-electronic-jazz fussion, and, well, Rammstein. Some things of that are interesting and worth listening, others rather boring. But when he comes at my home, we interchange music (and books). He introduces me to metal, I'm trying to reintroduce him in some metal stuff he don't know, basically the experimental/non headbanging.

Sepultura->Unleashed->Edge of Sanity->Dying Fetus->CoF->More American Death->In Flames/Dark Tranquillity->insane amounts of bands that I listen to today!

but the first time I heard Slayer I recognized the riff from Angel of Death that KMFDM had stolen for one of their songs, haha.

I liked black sabbath, deep purple and king crimson for years before, though, and probably some other bands with colours in their names too. white snake maybe, or tangerine dream. but I never really made the connection until I heard that heavy riffing in its original form.

Some Turkish metal band appeared on tv, I liked it. My uncle gave me their album, a friend saw it on my hand and lended me some Slayer and Metallica and then things happened. It was 1997 or 98.

That's simply how it started. Before I had listened to Rod Stewart (I still really like this guy though). And later I got interested in many different genres. I went through Black Metal, Thrash Metal, extremely happy Power Metal, shit like Limp Bizkit (just for a short period), then I discovered Virgin Steele which is my all-time favourite, then Chastain which is my second favourite band.
