I know power metal has never really breaken through in the US, but I was curious to know how well power metal bands has done in charts there? has for instance Nightwish boom made it in the Top40 over there?

I don't know about top 40, but I'm pretty sure Iced Earth broke the top 200. I'm sure there are a few other bands to break the top 200. Not sure about top 40, though.

Nightwish's Once hit #42 on the Billboard Heatseeker Charts according to Allmusic.com, but that's probably as high as any power metal band ever got.

But...but...Nightwish aren't power metal. Do you think they are?

No, but he mentioned them in his initial post, so I looked up the statistics for them.

I'm not that clueless of the genre, Ken. Obviously Nightwish lack the fundamental aspects of power metal: namely, homoeroticism and lyrics about slaying dragons.

I think I heard of Blind Guardian's 'A Night At The Opera' hitting some spot in the top 200.

EDIT: Yeah, it made 37 on the Top Independent Albums chart. Thats all I could find.

Ughh well how does Hair Metal figure into all of this, that was all the rage at one point in the U.S. As of right now there isn't much of anything in the way of Metal that your average Dick and Jane are downloading on their Ipods. That's why I laugh my balls off when someone accuses a metal band of going "mainstream."

Yes they are Symphonic Power Metal with a female vocalist. If you put new Sonata Arctica and Stratavarious in the PM label then Nightwish goes there for sure.

What would you call them? Not Gothic Metal.

No, Nightwish are not gothic metal.

Chick singer =/= gothic metal. Tell me Oceanborn and Wishmaster aren't Power Metal albums. Go on, I dare you.

And just to be pedantic, Nightwish don't have a female singer. :P

*Loads shotgun*

Nightwish is not gothic metal.

And Tarja did not move her arms in a wavy motion. Within Temptation's vocalist does. A lot.
