They're legendary and deservedly so, but they weren't very good at all.

I was going to start an argument, but then I looked at your avatar and realised I shouldn't take your opinions seriously.

Why? I'm not as big an expert of the mid/late seventies' punk scene as you are, but they were massively influential and wrote some great songs. Anyone liking Venom who doesn't like them is just foolish.

The Damned, The Clash, The Vibrators all very good. The Jam I don't like that much, not a huge Paul Weller fan. Wire and the Ruts I shall look into, ta muchly.
And you ignored my Venom point

The best seventies punk band was King Crimson!
Sex Pistols are actually terrible. I guess if you translated them into nowadays terms you'd get that new Darkthrone video. :P :o

The Sex Pistols were only useful for their notoriety; everything else is crap. All they ever had was an overabundance of vitriol, and vitriol alone does not a good punk band make.

Venom's more like Motorhead gone rawer, not really any Sex Pistols connection there.

They do have an awesome name.

Sex Pistols = crap musicians with catchy songs
Venom = crap musicians with crap songs

Conclusion: Sex Pistols > Venom

best part of aforementioned dumb article about a terrible band:

a brainy journalist wrote:
A shortlist of nominees is sent to an international body of about 700 voting "rock experts".

where does one sign up to be a rock expert? do they mean geologist?
