I'm not saying these guys are the best on a technical level, or the best songwriters or whatever. I just like 'em.

Criss Oliva (RIP - Savatage)
Chris Caffery (Savatage, Docta Butcha, CC)
Andre Olbrich (Blind Guardian)
Gus G (I dont even know anymore)
Kai Hansen (Gamma Ray)
Alex Lifeson (Rush)

Gary Holt
Bobby Gustafson (Head First!)

Ihsahn
Mantas
Tipton and Downing (can't have one without the other)
Jason Becker
Marty Friedman

And fuck you, Esteban kicks ass!

1. Luc Lemay (GORGUTS): Here's a quick story- the first time I listened to Obscura, I stopped the CD after the first song, called up a metal-listening friend, and described the song like this:
"Shitting fuck! Holy... shit... fucking... fuck! Fucker... shit motherfucker! Fucking fucker fucking fucks shit! SHIT! FUCK!"
2. Aaron Turner (ISIS): I love the riffs on everything he's done, ever, so much. I don't think he's ever written a bad riff. Seriously. They all flow perfectly and complement each other in building an atmosphere.
3. Mille Something (KREATOR): For his thrash days. Man could rip through riffs like an inhuman hellbeing bound for the warfield.
4. Zamoth (EMPEROR-ZYKLON): If I loved the riffs in World OV Worms and Aeon any more, I'd figure out a way to chemically combine the soundwaves with my eardrums so I could never stop hearing them.
5. Brent "Gurn" McCarthy (BRUTAL TRUTH): WHOA. Jesus. This guy is as flexible as a wad of ABC gum and not nearly as disgusting. Just listen to the brutal riff-whirlpools in songs like Jemenez Cricket and Blue World, then lend your ears to the screaming punk/grind anthems of Pork Farm and Dementia... and that's on one CD. All of his work fits into no mold that I can think of.
6. Jon Levasseur (CRYPTOPSY): Just listen to Phobophile and then Cold Hate, Warm Blood. I don't need to say anything, those songs speak for themselves.
7. Justin Broadrick (GODFLESH, JESU): Goddamn... this fellow's riffs are as torturously hateful and drawn-out as the Germanic treatment of Jews circa 1943. Driving, anthemic, no. Sludgy, unique, and inimitatable, yes.
8. Scott Ian (ANTHRAX): For his thrash days (Fistful of Metal-Persistence of Time), he was damn excellent. Great melodic thrashing riffs, and some of the thrashingest thrash breaks in thrash history. Thrashingest, heh heh heh.
9. Wrest (LEVIATHAN): I just love his varied and emotional style. Not much else to say, except 'Listen to Heir To the Noose of Ghoul and In This Slaveship to really see why I love him.'
10. Phil Demmel & Rob Flynn (VIO-LENCE): For their thrash days. Best thrash duo ever. Eternal Nightmare proves it.

These are all just guitarists that I really like/love, not technically skilled or necessarily groundbreaking ones.

no particular order :

Robert Fripp (King Crimson) : because he can play anything better than anybody else... the downside is his technicality sometimes makes him a bit souless
Jeff Beck : in the late 60's they said Clapton was God when it was really J.Beck who was atteining the supreme
Steve Hackett (Genesis, solo) : kind of Fripp's little brother but more soul...
Ritchie Blackmore (Deep Purple, Rainbow) : just an awesome soloist, he makes the more über skilled solo look easy
Jimmy Page (Led Zeppelin) : soulful soloist and rythm guitaris + great composer
Reeve Gabrels (David Bowie) : sounds like Audioslave/RATM's guitarist would sound if he was good...
Omar Rodriguez Lopez (The Mars Volta, At The Drive In) : newest addition to my fav' guitarists list... he fits the music he plays in perfectly and gives us more than what the average guitar player would be able to give...
Geoff Farina (Karate, solo) : just great ! my fav' "clean sound" guitarist
Dave Murray (Iron Maiden) : the most underrated metal guitarist ever...
Stanley Jordan : über skilled genius and master of tapping

good list, Stefan!

I'll make my top ten list now, having given it some thought:

Fripp, Buzzo, Iommi, Wata (from Boris), Thordendal, Howe, Gunn (King Crimson's secret weapon), Schuldiner, Oldfield and Rodriguez-Lopez.

I'm my favorite guitarist.

Bjorn Dannov is good, as is James Murphy. But, really, this post was all about me. :P
