It's hard to apply melody to a lot of DM. But yeah, like most people have already said, Lykathea Aflame certainly occupy that upper-strata of DM bands with a genuine flare for it. And like I said, I'd put ATG's Terminal Spirit Disease up there as well, but not too many others.

Surely some of the more crazy mathcore stuff out there is absent of melody?

Agreed, I suppose that was what I meant by "rhythmic trickery".

I was being a bit sarcastic, hence my use of italics.

Don't worry, my point was that sometimes people attribute "melody" to DM a bit too liberally... Irrespective of whether you were being sarcastic or not

Chaosphere by Meshuggah has practically no melody to speak of.. all the solos are free-jazz atonal bursts that last about five seconds and Jens Kidman's range is like.. well, yes, monotonous is precisely the right word to use.. and the rest of the band play identical parts.

I love that album but the majority of reviewers panned it for not being Destroy Erase Improve

Yeah, I dug Chaosphere too, but melodic it was not. I never got why Destroy Erase Improve was so highly thought of. Sure, Future Breed Machine is an incredible track but the others weren't very memorable.

Yea, neither do I... Chaosphere, I and Catch 33 are my favourite Meshuggah albums. Nothing feels so empty from the lack of bass.

I guess I should have rephrased the question as "best use of melody in death metal" but whatever... i wasn't really talking about melodic death bands rather bands who use melody to enhance their sound or something...

Behemoth are really good at that, their lead guitar parts make me think of battle commands in the middle of a war for some reason.

I love Nothing, its right up there with Chaosphere for me. We need a Chaosphere review on this site so a Meshuggah album can actually get an accurate score. *Hint, hint, Dee*

With that, Dark Tranquillity or Amon Amarth would be my choices for the topic at hand.

They should re-record nothing, but use a bass guitar the 2nd time around. The songs on it are awesome, but with the only low end being the downtuned guitars it sounds so off

NO! That would be a bad idea in my opinion. Nothing is fine the way it is, and I appreciate the distinctive sound.

Mors Principium Est have amazing melodies, especially due to their great use of keyboards. I'm now listening to Kataklysm - It Turns To Rust and it is so melodic!! Can't believe it!

Definately agree with Nile and Behemoth, Anata should also be in there, very melodic but also very death metal, but not in a melodeath way!

Wayd.

Props to Vehemence for their melody:brutality ratio.

Dismember has had some pretty good moments too.

Well, you see bands like Nile, Behemoth and Vital Remains that play brutal Death Metal (excluding Behemoth which is more Blackend Death Metal) they tend to use melodies at a very percise moment and time which counts, considering how BruTal they are.

And I just got Kataklysm's new album. I've heard a lot of good things about it, so hopely it turns out fine.
