Jurgen said it. Two major generalizations people like to make concerning drumming seem to be the speed issue that he adressed, but also people having the idea that jazz drummers are automatically better than all metal drummers. Of course, it's bullshit. These people completely ignore the fact that numerous metal drummers incorporate many different styles into their playing and are much more versatile than a strict jazz player, have the skill to pull off the same things and the open mind to do more. Not to mention that all drummers should be judged on their individual skill and ability, not just the genre they play in.
I was at a drumming competition once, and saw this jazz snobbery go on right next to me. A metal drummer played, pulling some nice double bass, fills, a few blasts, so on, but not ONLY blasts like some death/black drummers will do for a solo, he gets cheered and goes of without incident. Then this jazz guy goes up, and of course doesn't use the second foot pedal, and is playing some quick one footed bass here and there, and the guys next to me are fucking astonished, going on about how "he's only using one foot, i'd like to see that other guy do that" "now THAT's impressive". Now, the first guy's footwork was not only just as fast, but faster, but since he didn't choose to limit himself to one foot somehow HE is the inferior drummer. It's ridiculous.
Yeah, it's pretty much like that another forum I post at. Anytime someone posts a metal drummer, they suck, but if it's a jazz guy, or just someone playing a simple rock beat, it's sooo good.
