Do you have a Borders in Newcastle? They're amazing... Comfy chairs and unlimited browsing time. Sometimes even a live piano player in the background. So if I'm waiting for someone in the city centre I can just get a whole pile of magazines/newspapers (including stuff you don't see in standard newsagents- Morning Star for example :D ) and read it all. So once a month that includes Metal Hammer. I'm not ashamed to admit it. Sometimes I even read Kerrap! if there's nothing else to look at.

Such soft southern pouffy things are unheard of oop north. Sounds fun, though.

To a Geordie, everywhere below Middlesbrough is south. It's like living in Alabama, only in England. Less lynchings here, suprisingly.

Whatever you say, southerner.

Well, north of the border it's not safe. Barbarians!

Seriously, of all the life experiences I would recommend, living as a fairly poshly-accented Englander in Newcastle is near the bottom of the list.

Apparently people like music just because other people like it. They neglect to mention it, but marketing probably creates the perception seed.

However, this can backfire, too.. people can hate music just because too many other people like it. A lot of metalheads are probably like that by definition..

yup... i always believed so, too... no big suprise there... it's kinda stupid, really, both scenarios i mean... and i do hate music that too many other ppl listen to, mostly because they really aren't all that good. And there's a lot of good music many ppl never get to hear because they only want to listen to what other ppl listen to, or simply because they either are too laisy or don't know where to look ... a shame..

Ehhh, this isn't really news to me but it's interesting seeing something like this scientifically proven. I seriously doubt Britney Spears will still be popular ten years from now since by then she will already be well into her thirties, her physical beauty will have died down, she'll probably be married with children (yes, it's bound to happen eventually), etc.

*Anyway, I'm going to bring something a little new to the table and point out that I think even in the metal scene, there are those extremists who won't even listen to the "more popular" metal bands like Iced Earth and Arch Enemy (despite the fact that about 99% of the mainstream probably doesn't even know who these two bands are) because they're not "underground enough" for them. Translation: They willingly relegate themselves to bands on garage-based record companies whose music can only be mail-ordered (ie. Unmatched Brutality Records). Which wouldn't be so bad except that it isn't even because they like the music. It's because they want to boost their egos and look cool by listening only to the most obscure crap they can find.

*I often wonder what would happen if death metal and black metal somehow became the next big thing with the mainstream. Would metal fans still be listening to those genres (even if they weren't watered down for mainstream acceptance)?

*For the record, it's always nice to have something a little mainstream in your music collection. Especially if a lot of your friends are non-metal fans (as is the case with me). Despite being a metal fan, I can still occasionally put on Dookie and easily enjoy it just as much as Enemies of Reality (I even enjoy some of American Idiot's songs - despite the fact that it was probably the biggest album of 2004 with the TRL crowd). Ditto to pretty much anything by Queens of The Stone Age (probably the most "underground" mainstream band), as well as Perfect Circle, Red Hot Chili Peppers, and even Garbage.

Do you have any disproof? Do I need to back up every single statement I make with specific examples? Isn't it possible that there exist at least one or two metal fans who are like this? May be I sounded like I was overgeneralizing a little bit, but I'm sure such metal fans do exist in one form or another. I'll just say that I can easily ask whether metal fans who claim a band put nu-metal influence into their music just to "Sellout" have any real proof of that blanket statement.

logically, the burden of proof is on the assertor. I'm sure there are plenty of posers in every possible scene of movement but you did generalize..

also, it's possible that they just don't like how nu-metal/metalcore/various other commercial influence sounds. If I hear a band actively trying to impress me with crystal production and guitar sounds tuned to be inviting instead of heavy then there's a good chance that I won't like the music. I dislike slutty music. Nevermore fall afoul of that in my opinion, not that I consider them nu-metal - they're just overeager.

Digging deeper into the underground is a good way of finding music that puts you in the position of acquiring its taste.

I call it the Cricket & Beer Phenomenon. I can't imagine how the first person to brew beer took a sip at his creation and went "YUM!". But he stuck with it out of stubborn pride and found that he got really pissed. His mates saw this and endured the donkey piss flavour until they too became drunk. Soon everyone saw how fun this new beer stuff was and pretended to like the taste just as an excuse to get shitfaced. Now beer is a worldwide beverage that enjoys a healthy popularity brought on by the intoxicating effect it brings. But saying that you only drink it to get pissed is a bit common, so people always pretend they like the taste. And so everyone sees how everyone is "enjoying" the taste of beer, except no-one really is. They just drink it to get pissed.

As for cricket, I don't know why the fuck that boring shit is so popular. Over here it's like a bloody religion. But no-one wants to be seen as different now do they? So the myth of cricket being good perpetuates itself because the masses believe that the masses enjoy it, and the very masses that enjoy it are the ones that hated it in the first place.

I forget what this has to do with metal, but the radio only plays shit metal. And this shit metal is all that the general public is really exposed to, thus tarnishing the whole genre.

I seriously love the taste of beer. I can drink a single beer just for the taste. If I want to get shit faced I'll drink some cheap light beer, but if I want A beer I'll get a Boulevard or a Fat Tire. Beer tastes great, cricket sucks (actually I’ve never played it), and that’s my contribution to this thread.

I am tired of people thinking that I listen to band X because they have bad production or are kvlt. I listen because my entire view of music has changed from the definition of the pop song. Most of the heavily marketed bands in metal have the standard pop song structure and overly pristine production. I have no desire to listen to Angela Gossow growl out a chorus like "Behind the smile / I feel nothing I reach out to touch, but I'm not really there", because it sounds godawful to me. My favorite metal nowadays is 9-13 minute tracks that have no established formula, if people find that boring, so be it.

People's ignorance of music is really laughable sometimes. The other day I was wearing a The Funeral Pyre shirt (melodic death). A person asked if they were a punk band. I sad no they are death metal. She replied, "Oh so like Metallica." Dumbfucks I tell you.

What I mean is that, by the time she's in her thirties, her physical beauty will have probably died down and her whole selling point will have gone kaput.

Have you seen her lately? She wouldn't look out of place in a trailer.

Haha. I've seen her without make-up on and her physical beauty is as manufactured/man-made as a tub of margerine.
