I got bored this morning, so I started screwing around with Fruityloops for a bit. I found a tab site and got the tabs for Transylvanian Hunger and decided to see just how close I could get to the original using FL. The finished product, coupled with Kimmy's posting of his songs gave me an idea for the Fruityloops Challenge;

Pick a song, any song, and try to reproduce it using Fruityloops (or similar program). Then post it for the rest of us to enjoy.

I know this isn't Black/Death/Thrash specific, but in general, the folks in this forum seem to enjoy stuff like this more.

I also know I kind of cheated by picking the most simple song ever recorded. I was able to reproduce the entire song using only 5 patterns.

Also, it would be entertaining if you attempted to add vocals to your song, but it's not mandatory. I'm personally having a hard time getting the timing down right for TH, but at least it sounds goofy as hell and should give you guys a laugh.

ha ha :D cool... i can't figure out to use FruityLoops, but i'd love to hear how you manage re-create your version of Transilvanian Hunger, once you're finished :P

Right now I have all the music done, minus a few odd drum fills that I'm not sure I will even put in. I'm having a really hard time with the vocals though. No matter how many times I listen to the song with a lyric sheet in front of me, it seems like Nocturno Culto was kind of randomly skipping around the sheet.

Once I figure that out, I will try to actually record me doing the vocals while listening to my version of the song, so I can attempt to get the timing somewhat correct.

Alright, after hearing how badly I mangled the first verse of the song, I decided not to do any more vocals. I did however leave that first verse in the final recording so you could hear exactly how awful it was. It's off rhythm horribly and I can't get up high enough to do a real black metal shriek. If you hear a tiny bit of a growl instead of shriek, it's because it was a growl and i just dropped the bass and most of the mid out of it with the eq.

That being said, here's my masterpiece for you all to make fun of :D :D :D

It's not that awful. I've heard worse stuff made under the name of Black Metal. And the vocals are quite interesting, if you're into that style of BM.

Edit: that was damn generous of me.

Yes it was generous

The problem I run into is that the longer I listen to my version, the more tolerable it becomes. Thus, in my mind, I need to drop the quality of the recording down to try to get closer to the original. I must have done that at least 5 times while trying to get it all together.

But without exception, every time I put the headphones on and start listening to it, for the first 30 seconds or so I'm sitting there thinking "What the hell is that noise?!?!?!"

it's not bad, considering it was made with fruityloops :D... but i think you need to work on the production of the vox some more, in order to make it sound more like the original

i was thinking about trying to make Black MEtal ist Krieg - how hard can it be!?!? :D

lol, there is no production to the Vox. I did a whispered growl into the microphone on my computer (my wife was asleep in the next room), then added reverb, 2 layers of distortion, compression, and chorus effects to it to make up for the fact that 1. I can't go high enough to do a proper black metal shriek. 2. The wife would have shit herself if I had gone into a full bore death growl while she was asleep.

If I were you, I'd have been in bed with the wife rather than wasting your time like that. What time is it over there?

it's 1:30pm now. I'm up really late for me (I work nights). I took the kids to school and everything this morning, so I let her sleep in. Thus not wanting to scare her to death by using a growl as an alarm clock.

Anyone know of a good program that is very easy to use that I can make drum beats with?

I find Fruity Loops to be pretty easy... it takes about an hour or so to get some pretty good drum parts and in a few more hours practise you'll be able to recreate Angel of Death drum-part... that is if you're any talented...

That sounds wonderful... If you are experiencing any problems with the lyrics you can find them here...

The minor variations make it impossible to remember them exactly. Kickass song, though.
