We recently had a chance to interview Through The Eyes Of The Dead. Here's what they had to say...
Tell us about the new album?
“Bloodlust” was recorded in April of 2005 and was engineered by Jamie King of The Basement Studios. I think it is definitely our heaviest record to date. It just hit stores on October 25th so go check it out!
How long did it take you to complete the record?
We were in the studio for three weeks total.
What does it feel like to be apart of a major metal label like Prosthetic?
It’s very awesome working with the label. They don’t have a ton of bands like some labels, so things are a bit more personal which I like. They’ve gotten our record out there everywhere and have helped us in so many ways. We are definitely proud to be apart of the family.
I just reviewed Bloodlust for our site, and while it is heavily influenced from hardcore, there are large influences from death metal as well. Could you tell us what kind of background you guys are from? Metal, Hardcore, or both?
All of us come from metal backgrounds and none of us are really into hardcore as much. We do have elements of both but I think we try to incorporate that heaviness to sort of balance it out.
Alot of metal purists claim metalcore is just a passing phase, much like nu-metal was, and will soon fizzle out. Do you think the metalcore movement is a flash in the pan, or do you think it will survive?
I don’t like to categorize into sub genres really. I think any form of good music will stand out regardless of what genre it’s in. There are a lot of bands I see today that are definitely just a trend and will fade out soon. Also, a lot of bands are doing the whole Swedish metal thing but we all know At The Gates and In Flames created the sound and their music definitely lives throughout. Everyone else is just jumping the bandwagon.
Have you started touring yet for the new record?
Yes, we just completed a tour with Ion Dissonance, The Red Death, and Embrace the End. We were on the road for 2 months and we definitely had a good time. We will be going out with our good friends in The Classic Struggle and The Knife Trade in November/December in support of the new record. We also have big things lined up for 2006 but nothing is confirmed yet.
I have been attending the New England Metal and Hardcore Festival in Worcester, MA for the last 3 years, and have come to realize over those years that the NEMF is the premiere showcase for metalcore acts in the nation. Is there any possibility of you being apart of that fest? If would be a great spot to showcase your sound!
Yeah, there were talks with Prosthetic about getting on that this year. I think we definitely have a spot and we are very excited to play the festival.
What would say are your main influences as an artist and as a band?
As for me, I’m really into old school death metal and European metal as well. At the Gates, Death, and Carcass are some of my favorites. I think the band can all agree on those bands as well but we do have diverse tastes.
The New Wave of British Heavy Metal brought metal bands such as Iron Maiden, Saxon, Diamond Head and Venom and other incredibly influential bands onto the scene. Do you consider Through the Eyes of the Dead and other young, up and coming bands like Shadows Fall, Lamb of God, God Forbid, Killswitch Engage, As I Lay Dying and so many others to be apart of a New Wave of American Heavy Metal? I ask because I have heard this term tossed around quite a bit as of late.
I’ve heard a few people say we were the new wave of American metal before on our myspace actually, haha. If that’s what people think then we are very proud to be apart of that! We are working very hard to get our name out there and hopefully we can have an impact in the American metal scene.
Do you see the face of metal (and perhaps even hardcore) changing perminently as a result of bands such as yours?
I think we will have an impact in the genre because we set ourselves apart. I don’t think we sound like any of the bands that our out today. We combine so many elements that other bands don’t. We are always working hard to push boundaries as well so we’ll definitely see what happens in the future.
What does Through the Eyes of the Dead have in store for us in the future?
We are working on a lot of stuff! We have some big tours coming up and we plan to promote the album as much as possible. There are talks of going over to Europe in March but nothing is set in stone yet. We are going to be on the road constantly. Keep checking our website and myspace for more details!
