M.R: Who and why did you chose Custard as the name of the band ?
It was in the year 1987 that I founded the band. The music should be a kind of "Fun-thrash-metal" and I was looking for a name that describes our kind of music but who´s not evil like the most bandnames in this time, like Slayer or Napalm Death. We looked into an English-dictionary and the word CUSTARD sounded really good to us. We didn´t really think about the meaning, so there is no background and no deeper sense behind it. As our style of music turns to traditional power metal we decided to keep the name because it was different and everyone wants to know our interpretation for CUSTARD, but we haven`t one.
M.R. : Your last album "For My King" is simply amazing, can you tell us more about the writing process involved for that album (maybe describe who writes the songs, lyrics, melodies...) ?
Our main songwriter is Dirk. He is a really good guitarist and he has the most ideas for the good melodic riffs and harmonic parts. I think he has the most feeling for the power metal stuff, so he is our musical director in the band. During the studio production he is the most busy guy in the band because he is the executive man at the mixing desk. My part is the technical knowledge to bring his visions on tape. We are a good team, I think. The lyrics are written from Micha. He is totally stupid. I stopped asking for the meaning behind his stories. Once I did, and he told me about lines between the time of the knights and the present time that took about 3 hours. But I swear: if you can read between the lines, there are good stories in his lyrics. And you can take every tale as your own story of life.
M.R. : What are your sources of influence ?
Of course, we are inspired by our daily living. Sure we are power metal fans, so we have many sources where we get influences from. We love this kind of music and everytime we listen to other bands of this genre we take a little inspiration for our music.
M.R. : When did you know you wanted to become a musician, and at that time did you know it would be in a metal band ?
My whole family is very familiar with music but not in the profession. As I founded the band I choose to learn drums because I saw some fantastic drummers on a German television show and I was interested in drumming. So I bought a cheap drumkit and start learning and I didn´t stop that till now. My favorite music is metal and why should I play a different style ?
M.R. : Do you plan any tour ? any chance to see you in Switzerland ?
Recently we started to play some single shows in Germany. We are booked for a few festivals and we are looking to get a support tour in the summer. I hope that we can check out the Swiss audience, too.
M.R. : What's next for Custard ?
I hope we´ll get much more experience on stage and we get enough ideas to record the next good album this year.
M.R. : What do you think of internet, what's your opinion on it's impact on today's metal bands?
In my opinion, the net is a good, cheap way to do a good promotion to our style and spread information fast around the world. If you are looking for new good bands you don´t have to trust some high performance mags. You can search and find by yourself. The main theme in the last while was the Napster fight with Metallica. Bullshit, they are millionaires. If I look for new music, I don´t buy their album first. But if I listen to a good song (MP3) on the net and I want to get more then I go to my dealer and order their album. I´ve no problem with one or two free downloaded tracks off the internet. It´s a good way to promote your album.
M.R. : Your lyrics are very epic. Where does that come from ? Role playing, video games, heroic fantasy books ?
No, it comes from the sick brain of our bass player ! He often plays strange things with his Play Station. Once we played the whole night together a game called "Resident Evil" and after that I went home alone. I was frightend, indeed!!!
M.R. : Can you name us your favorite albums (3 or more...) ?
Three are several....
1. Gamma Ray - Land of the Free
2. Nightwish - Wishmaster
3. Stratovarius - Visions
4. Helloween - Walls of Jericho
5. Edguy - Theater of Salvation
6. Halford - Resurrection
7. Savatage - The Wake of Magellan
M.R. : What do you do when you don't play with Custard ?
I have to earn money to put it into the band. I´ve built a house last year and that is a lot of work. After all, I have to do a part of the management for CUSTARD and everyday I have to play drums to keep my fast double bass. It´s hard training to be fast.
M.R. : A last word for your fans and our readers ?
Thank you for reading this interview and for your interest in CUSTARD. I hope that we are able to visit your country for some gigs and we can thank you for your support personally. Stay metal !
