What kind of reactions is the new Demons and Wizards album getting in the press, since it hasn't been released yet to the general public?
Pretty good, like you said, it hasn't been released yet to the public, so I can't really say how it has been doing overall, as the fan's opinions are the ones that truly matter to me.
Is there any material perhaps left over from the album that could see light on a new album from Demons and Wizards, Iced Earth, or Blind Guardian?
No, we used everything we wrote towards this album. When there is a new Demons and Wizards album, it will be entirely new music, nothing left over.
Are there any plans to tour for the new album?
Not right now, Blind Guardian just went into pre production this past week, and I am about to start writing the new Iced Earth album, so there is simply no time to put together a tour. We would love to tour, but there is no time at this point. Now if the album sells like crazy, much more than the first one, then we would do everything we could to put a tour together to promote it, we would be stupid not to.
What is your favorite Demons and Wizards song?
Probably Fiddler on the Green, to me, it has so much magic in it. I don't really have a favorite from Touched By the Crimson King, There are a number of songs on that album that I would consider very good, but I can't call one of them my favorite. Terror Train is a really good, just fast paced ripping track, I like to listen to it when I am really pissed about something. Crimson King is really good too, I like to listen to it when I am sort of feeling down and depressed, as it is a really emotional song to me.
What are your expectations for the new album?
I don't really have any. I think it may sell 50k - 100k more than the first one, but other than that, I don't really have any.
A few songs on Touched by the Crimson King were inspired by The Dark Tower saga, how did Hansi and yourself come about writing songs based on that?
I myself have never read the series, but Hansi had just finished it when we were in pre production, and he approached me about doing a few songs based on the story, because he thought it would be a really good basis to write some songs on. So I had him explain it to me and I agreed. So as usual, I wrote the guitar parts and he fit lyrics into them, and they turned out to be great songs. The three songs that are based on the series are, Crimson King, Terror Train, and The Gunslinger.
What have been the initial reactions to the newly released Gettysburg DVD?
Well, a lot of people like it, and a lot of people don't. I think the ones who don't like it bought it thinking it would be something different than it was, but we never tried to cover up the fact that it was more of a documentary on the battle with the video to the trilogy and some different stereo mixes for the fans that may have surround sound. Out of the ones who liked it, I think they really have an appreciation for history and for that battle, so they can appreciate it for what it is. As for the ones who don't like it, not everyone will like this because it isn't your traditional band DVD, it is something far different, and to my knowledge, it has never been done before on a band DVD. This DVD isn't for everyone, as there will be some people who don't enjoy it.
How is Tim's and your chemistry as musicians with each other?
Oh, it is great, I think we have a very long road ahead for us, and I hope we will be working together for a very long time. This is just the beginning of what Iced Earth will become with him singing. He and I are great friends as well; we just both had daughters a month apart, so he and I just got together in Ohio for a week and just hung out. I had a blast over there. I think he is a great singer, and as soon as they selected him to sing for Priest, I told myself that I wanted to work with him someday, and low and behold, it happened and it has been a dream come true.
Will he have any part in writing the new album?
I would like for him to, but he isn't really a song writer, he is a singer. He doesn't really have any experience as a song writer, but I do want to give him a chance. We will see how it goes; he has a lot of growing to do as a song writer. I think he did a great job on Red Baron/Blue Max, so we will see how it goes with the new albums writing process. He has never really had a chance to write songs in the past for his albums that he was on, but I hope to maybe help change that and give him a chance.
What, if anything, are you doing about trying to fill Ralph and James places?
Nothing right now, it isn't really the time right now and I am not too worried about it. I have been getting videos, cds, pictures, and mp3s daily from people who would like to have the positions, but I have not acted on it yet. There are a few prospective people I am looking at, but I have not made any decisions yet, and don't intend to for a while.
You kind of touched on it earlier, but you said the new Iced Earth album is about to start being written. What is it going to be about, any ideas?
Yes, absolutely. It is going to be the continuation of the Something Wicked trilogy. I hope to devote two full albums to it. I am hoping for about three or three and a half hours of music. It is going to be very intricate, and probably technically the hardest thing I have ever written. It is going to have everything in it that it would need to have to give the feel from the regions where the story was based. I hope to have it fully orchestrated and maybe include some sitars and other instruments from the region. I have let Jim Morris read part of what I have written about it, because the story itself has been written since Something Wicked came out. He is a really big science fiction fan, and he said that he is so looking forward to the albums being written, because it is one of the best science fiction stories he has ever read.
