MR: Hello! First of all, congratulations on your new album, it`s been elected Surprise Of The Month here at Metal Reviews with a quote of 88/100.
Thanx,it`s a pleasure for us.
MR : First question, who decided to call the band Chinchilla, but most importantly, why ?
Our first drummer Marcel. It`s not a typical name for a Metal band, but I think it`s an interesting name. Chinchillas are funny and sweet animals, on the other side they get killed for some rich chicks coats. It`s like Dr. Jekyl and Mr. Hyde, good and bad, life and death, both sides, dominant, fast and raw songs, the old school of Heavy Metal and on the other hand the ballads, tender and sentimental
MR : You`re using drums like they was used in 80`s Metal, unlike most Power Metal bands nowadays, that play twice as fast. Why this choice ?
Cause it fits our music. It`s a part of it. I love this way of drum playing, that`s all.
MR :Who are the bands that influenced Chinchilla the most ?
The favorite influence is the old kind of Metal. All bands of the early days, for example Kiss, Saxon, Accept, Ozzy, Black Sabbath, Dio, Rainbow and some new bands like Symphony X, Stratovarius, Labyrinth and Primal Fear. It has to be a good mixture between the old stuff and the new influences to find your own sound and way to create your own kind of Heavy Metal.
MR : If I tell you that Chinchilla`s vocals are a mixture of both Bruce Dickinson and Tobias Sammet, what would you say ?
It will be a pleasure for Tommy to be mentioned with such great singers, but I think it`s always a matter of taste. Tommy`s voice is very interesting and it`s very dangerous to label him, cause his voice has so many colours. Take a look at the ballads on "Madness", sentimental and smooth. On the other hand dominant and raw on our Metal songs.
MR : Who writes the songs in Chinchilla ?
I wrote the basic guitar riffs and the main keyboards, 3 months before we entered the studio. During that time I aranged the songs in my little homerecording studio. 8 weeks before we started to record, I began writing the lyrics. 2 weeks later it was finished.
MR : What`s next for Chinchilla ?
Now we go on tour with DEMON and TAD MOROSE,from Feb.19th - Mar.3rd. After that we`ll play some shows with Paul DiAnno. I hope we`ll play at some big Festivals in Europe. In December we`ll start recording our next CD
MR : Can you tell me your 5 best Heavy Metal records ?
1. Motörhead - Overkill,Another Perfect Day
2. Accept - Restless And Wild
3. Manowar - Louder Than Hell
4. Stratovarius - Infinity
5. Impellitteri - Crunch
MR : What got you into Metal and when did you discover you wanted to make Metal music ?
I saw Lemmy from Motörhead in "Scene 77", a German TV rock show,in 1975. After I saw him and his band, it was obvious, that`s the direction. That`s rock & roll and that`s what I wanna do.
MR : There seems to be a recuring "political" subject that comes in many of your songs. Could you tell me more about your lyrics and the message behind them ?
"The Last Millenium" is about the weakness of mankind and the bad moneypolicy. The ambitions for power, glory and wealth. Some people do everything for that, but for each thing in your life, you have to pay a price. There is always the difference between good and bad, black and white. You have to make a decision. In the end, when you`re dead, there`s the big purgatory and there`s always your own bill you have to pay for. The amount of your bill depends on your efforts. That`s what the lyrics of "The Last Millenium" are about.
MR : What do you think about MP3s on the internet ?
It`s ok, but they have to work at the sound. Nowadays it`s a big difference to listen to a CD with a perfect sound, or a compressed MP3 file. The fact, that most of the illegal downloads are MP3 files, is another reason for me to keep my eyes open. Sure,it`s a good technique, but the only way for me to accept it, is puttin` 1-3 songs as a special MP3 edition on the net, to give the listener an impression of the artist's work
MR : One last word to our readers and your fans ?
