Trivium is a young band out of Florida that's getting a lot of press and good reviews of their first full length "Ember to Inferno." I got a chance to send Matt some questions by E-mail and he responded the next day!
What are your thoughts on the album?
I personally enjoy the music quite a bit. I find that usually when I make my own songs - it's hard to actually sit down and listen to it on a normal basis. I happened to listen to this one a little more... haha. but that's me. Aside from that I am so happy about the CD and all it's response. We put so much hard time and effort into the creation of the album - and the response has been so promising.
What's the response been to the album?
We've had so many reviews and we have read them all (close to 80 already) - a majority of the reviews have been pretty positive and supportive - From country to country (as far as Romania to Japan; Belgium to Spain; Mexico to Canada) people are loving the album, we get a steady stream of emails from people who want to buy it and the demo CD and just to say they liked what they heard. I think what's really exciting for people is the promise of a good future and since we had a pretty strong debut. I hope to live up to everyone's standards (which I'm sure are high) we've been gaining comparisons to some of our favorites like In Flames, Arch Enemy, Megadeth, Metallica, Shadows Fall etc... and it's just the biggest compliment.
What do you think is the strongest track and why?
That's a hard one. I think I'll go off of one of our listeners favorite's overall... I think its most likely "Ember To Inferno." This track has been named as an anthem track- 'THE' Trivium song. I think that's because this song (quickly) shows everything we're capable of... it's like a sampler of the things we can throw into a song- and still keep maximum organization: speed, heaviness, solos, harmonies, clean vocals, catchiness, screaming... it's got a little bit of everything. It's a very straightforward song.
Are there touring plans in the works?
Yep... plenty of options being circulated here and there. But the main exciting event and focus is in the video we will be shooting for "Ember To Inferno" in NYC in January. This is going to be quite the exciting occasion.
How good has Lifeforce Records been to you guys?
Great- people all around the world are hearing us- and in turn we hear good things back from them. We're still both new in our relationship and we hope that everything goes nice and big from here.
Who are your personal biggest influences?
Well when I was younger it was all about: Metallica, Pantera, Testament, Megadeth, and Machinehead. And now it's: In Flames, Arch Enemy, At The Gates... My personal favorite bands as of now are: In Flames and Killswitch Engage. So you'll definitely hear a bit of everything in there. I think it's cool, because a lot of my older influences will spill out every once in a while.
What equipment do you use?
Peavey XXX Head into two Marshall 4x12's; A Gibson Les Paul custom, Washburn Dimebag Darrell Stealth... and that's it. A quite simplified rig- but it sounds so damn nice.
If you could only listen to five albums for the rest of your life, what would they be?
In Flames- Reroute, Jester Race, Colony, Clayman, Whoracle.
What's the best album you've heard this year and what have you been listening too recently?
Most impressive things of this year (i hope they're all this year) have got to be: Burst, The Darkness, Mastodon, Beloved, A Life Once Lost, Avenged Sevenfold, Burnt By The Sun, Between The Buried and Me. The best album... that's a difficult decision between: Dimmu Borgir, Arch Enemy, Burst, Beloved.
Have you guys had any really memorable shows good or bad as of yet?
Hard Rock live in Orlando, FL (our 2nd time 9/03). There was about 2000 people there when we played - people went absolutely insane when we played. Everything was perfect. The other best show for us this year was in Saalfeld, Germany on our European mini-tour, people were singing along, ninja moshing, stage diving - that was quite the sight.
When you guys aren't playing, what do you do?
I play video games, watch TV, DVD's, South Park, go to the gym, computer, and resting. The band stuff is quite mentally and physically demanding- so I try to keep myself rested.
What's the deal with the video you're about to shoot?
It's for "Ember" and it's being directed by Dale Resteghini, Raging Nations Films. Dale recently directed Hatebreed's "This is Now" currently #1 on the CVC report as well videos for E-Town Concrete, Stretch Armstrong among others)it will be an incredible video. Dale and I have been working out the concept for our "mini movie" and it will be quite the memorable video.
Describe your ideal touring lineup.
In Flames, Trivium, Arch Enemy, At The Gates (reformed). Those 4 to start it off would be great.
Tell us a good metal story.
This is hard question... I've actually been thinking for a while... I think I'll have to get back to you on that one... haha.... Thanks Jay.
