Despite having their debut album, The Arrival, released earlier this year I feel that I have known Rising Faith for a long time now. All the way from their 1999 Demo to the finished album I've been charting this bands rise since the getgo. Kristian Wallin lets us in on the bands intricacies, the perfection of his voice and where we will see Rising Faith in the future.
Your debut album The Arrival has been out now for several months, how has the reaction been to it?
The reaction has been very positive, both here in Europe and in the USA. We are very grateful for that, cause I know that a band’s debut album can often be criticized due to the fact that it is “new ground” and the reviewer has no experience of the band to lean against. I was nervous as hell when I first read a review, he he, but mostly, people seem to have a positive reaction to The Arrival, and no one is happier than us for that. Thanks everyone who supports us!
How come it took so long to get an album released? The Demo 99 and Imagination self released cds were recieved warmly be critics, I would have thought Rising Faith would be signed along time ago?
Well, directly after the recording and pressing of the Imagination cd me, Kristian W, went to Los Angeles to study vocal technique at Musicians Institute in Hollywood for a year. And after that we recorded a cd simply called demo 2001 and with that one we got Limb on the hook. As you surely know, there are so many good bands that are playing metal so there´s a really hard competition about that record deal, but never give in and one day it will come to you.
Since Demo ’99 and Imaginations your voice has grown incredibly and the improvement is readily identifiable. What vocal training did you partake in? Was any of it professional or was the training entirely self taught?
Really great to hear. Its always fun to hear some positive response for the work and time that you have put into it. I had some professional vocal training both here in Sweden and in the USA. Before that I practically trained myself by listening to other great singers and played some piano to get a felling for the pitch, but it is always good to take a couple of private lesson to avoid hurting you voice. Cause it is very easy that you start to develop bad habits when you sing such as squeezing, screaming and miss breathing. But as always, there are no “ magical “ ways to reach the goal, just hard fucking work and hours after hours of practice. So just free your voice and let it be what it is and work from there, dont try to sound as anyone else, heed your own voice.
Is Rising Faith going to tour for The Arrival, cos on your homepage I only saw a few one off dates listed on there.
Well, we surely hope so but there is nothing but a couple of smaller gigs booked for the moment. It is quite hard to get a tour on your debut album. So when the winter steps in we must start to focus on our second album and write some asskicking songs, and besides that we trying to make a couple of gigs here in Sweden.
I’ve also noticed that the band’s sound has undergone a change, for the better I think, since your early days to a darker, heavier sound. What prompted this?
It just felt natural to walk towards a darker and heavier sound for all of us. I think that kind of music fits us all pretty well. It always takes awhile before you have found your own path that feels cool with your self, cause at the bottom line that is always the most important thing.
What song on The Arrival puts you in the most metal of moods, one where you have to wield your sword and kick heathen poser ass?
Oh, it´s so personal but if you ask me I have to say Rage or Head of the Anvil or , or… its full of them.(laughs)
What’s it like knowing a fan from Midland Texas USA has been blowing his speakers for going on three years now with your music?
It feels great knowing that our music is blowing speakers all the way to Texas. That’s why we make our music in the first place, for the metal heads out in the world.
What motivates you in life to keep you walking the path of heavy metal?
Women, beer, and bangin’ our heads to all the great bands out there, both the old classic bands and the new bands. And of course our fans.
What do you think of the advent of mp3’s and their role in today’s music scene?
I think mp3s are good in a promotion way, since it's a great way to get a sample of an album. Though personally I think owning the original CD with the booklet and all is much more fun the some mp3's.
Has anyone asked you to sign their Rising Faith albums yet?
Actually yes. We had a gig a couple of months back when a girl came up to us and wanted her CD signed by all the band members, which felt great knowing that we made her very happy.
What is the fondest memory you have of the band since its inception and what is the most bitter?
When I had the finished product of our debut album in my hand. All that hard work put into the album finally made a lot of sense to me. We haven't really had any bitter moments so far. Of course some frustrating things has happend on gigs and such, but nothing that has made us feel like tossing our instruments and giving up. Rising Faith is here to stay, we will play metal till the day we die.
Having come this far already, what do you see in the future for Rising Faith?
More metal, harder work, and to come out and play a lot more then we have. We are dying to come out and play for all of those that like our music.
Have you guys been working on new material yet? If so, what can the fans expect from it?
We are currently rehearsing and making new songs for our next album, I think the fans can expect a more distinct, harder yet still melodic Rising Faith.
If you had to choose between being forced to listen to St Anger for 24 hours straight at maximum volume while locked inside a closet or being punched in the balls, just once but really really hard, by an angry wino that has just run out of alcohol, what would you pick?
I think I would go with the St Anger album. Can't be that bad can it?
You have the chance to tour the US with Iron Maiden and play in front of thousands of people every night but in order for this to happen you have to wear a shirt that has a picture of one of the Backstreet Boys on it that says “I Luv BSB” to a Manowar concert, would you do it?
Hell no! I rather get punched in the balls, just once but really really hard, by an angry wino that has just run out of alcohol. Seriously though, that would never happen. Sure, touring with Iron Maiden is every bands dream, but we wouldn’t sell out like that. Besides, wearing a BSB T-Shirt to a Manowar gig would be suicide.
Who is the most overrated band today and who is the most underrated?
Most overrated, Limb Bisquit, Linkin Park and all that "new metal" crap out there. Most Underrated, Anvil, those guys kicks ass!!
What question have I not asked that you have been waiting for this whole time and what would the answer be to that unsaid question?
I guess that one should be: Why is Kristian the only one who has long hair? Simple answer. He is the coolest in the band… (laughs)
Any last words for our www.metalreviews.com readers?
It is so damn good to hear from people that enjoy our music and I wish that I could show my gratitude more than just in words, but hopefully we will meet our fans in USA some time and I can promise you that we are gonna kick some serious ass. But for this time I just wanna give a big thanks to all of you for your support and that you put your faith in us.
