First of all, many thanks for taking time from your schedule and doing the interview. Is playing in Jesusmartyr what we Europeans call your ‘day job’, or is it more of a hobby?
It´s not a day job and it´s not a hobby. Jesusmartyr is a band that determined most of our decisions in life. We play as much as we can and try to be busy with the band as much as possible.
Can you tell us how the band was formed, and the main influences?
I met drummer Guillermo Gomez in 1994 and we started to jam, then Bruno joined us and we started to look for more people. We released our first album “Sudamerican Porno” as a quintet, we had keyboards, singer/guitarist, me on guitar, Bruno on bass and Guillermo in drums. We played a lot with that line up. During our second European tour we kicked the singer/guitarist out and the keyboardist started to sing (he was backing vocals before) then we kicked him out as well. Sebastian (guitarist nowadays) was our roadie and started to play with us. Then we had a line up with Bruno sing/bass, Sebastian and me on guitars and Guillermo on drums. Guillermo left the band to pursue other goals and since then we played with another drummer called Marcelo Castro, then he left the band and we played some session drummer and now Eduardo Turco is on drums with JM and he´s doing very well. Influences, too many to mention and it´s not only music or bands what inspires you to play.
What makes Jesusmartyr different from the other Modern Thrash Metal bands out there?
We are not pursuing to be different, we just focus on making good songs that we enjoy playing on stage. The fact of being from Argentina makes it a bit different anyway, we play more raw than in other parts of the world.
Why did you choose this style of Metal rather than, say, Black Metal? Do you believe that originality is essential to the genre, or doesn’t it matter as long as the riffs are good?
We play this style because it´s what we enjoy playing and what keeps us going. Regarding originality, I really don´t care that much about originality in any aspect, most of the bands I hear nowadays are not original at all, they are good and they play well and in the end that´s what matters to me. Of course I like it when there´s something fresh in the scene but it´s not something I “need”, I like well played honest music.
Have any of you had formal musical training?
Our drummer is a drum teacher and he studied a lot, for the rest we had the university of favourite albums, that was a very good musical formation. Just listen to bands that you enjoy and play along is great.
How would you define the band’s political and philosophical views? Do you try and live up to these in everyday life, and if so, how?
I used to study philosophy at university, I loved everything connected to the ancient Greek and also digged a lot into Buddhism as well. Our philosophy as a band is to enjoy what we do in every way and enjoy doing it with the people we do it. Politically, we basically don´t believe in the way things work, I personally don´t vote. We try to live our lives the best way possible and making ourselves and the people we love happy.
Coming from Argentina, do you get much local opposition to your Metallic way of life, from the religious etc – is it hard to be Metal in your country?
I don´t think anyone bothers about us at a religious sphere, and if they did, we wouldn´t care. We have nothing in common with that kind of people so we wouldn´t know anyway. Regarding being a metalhead, it is hard to be yourself in countries where there´s a lot of prejudice and lack of imagination in general. Argentina is sometimes no exception, same as many other countries, you get cool people and shit people, usually the latter are the ones that set rules and govern countries, that´s a pity. It really depends on you how you live your life, I´m a metalhead and I live my life the best way I can and I never ever paid attention to anything that came badly intentioned or that would take my freedom from me.
Do you find that coming from Argentina changes people’s perception of you as a band? Do you consider this racist or snobbish of the international scene at all?
It certainly adds something, I don´t consider it racist or snobbish, I think it´s quite normal. Most of the people feel attracted to what is unknown or rare for them.
We hear very little of Argentine Metal internationally. Is there a good local scene, and can you recommend any up-and-coming bands from your country?
Argentina is a country that has a lot of metal history, bands like V8 started thrash metal in the early eighties, probably even before most of the well known bands started. It has always been a rock country, Spanish spoken, the rest of the world don´t receive that and they think that it is weird to see an Argentine metal band, believe me, there are millions! Internationally not many bands make it even though they are good, that´s because it is a far country and we get absolutely no support whatsoever by any state-related institution to tour and promote what we do, in Europe most of the bands that tour get subsidies and stuff, in Latin America that is unthinkable, you´ll never get a buck for anything connected with art, and less with metal. Good bands from Argentina: Natas, Taura, Buffalo, Avernal, Social Shit, Embodiment (our drummer plays also there), Ban This, Otra Salida, there´s a lot of good stuff there, those are good examples for each genre.
Do you think Metal as a genre, and Extreme Metal in particular, will still be here in, say, another fifty years’ time?
I really wonder what will be there in fifty years time.
Would you describe you or your band-mates as party people? Does much alcohol get consumed, and if so, what’s your favourite poison?
We like to party, sometimes too much. Beer is our thing, but after a time you just drink whatever.
If you could tour with any one band, past or present, which would it be?
Sepultura with Max and Igor, that line up means a lot to me and inspired me to become a musician.
What are your current favourite albums, new or old, Metal or not?
I love Death Magnetic after many listens now, Meshuggah is always there, I listen to a lot of music, I´m listening to tango too now, it´s just mind blowing music in every way, latest Motorhead is also great, Behemoth, pff, a lot of stuff man, I just listen to a lot of music all the time.
Do you have a favourite joke you could tell us?
Wow, I know a lot of jokes but they are in Spanish and difficult to translate, so I will do it in Spanish, if you want to know, do your research. I hope you enjoyed it ;) You can put it into an online translator...
Thanks again for your time, any final words for those who haven’t checked the band out yet?
Thank you for your support and just say that if you are into extreme metal music, Jesusmartyr is a band worth checking out. Hope to see you all on tour soon! Keep it brutal!
