Without Face was formed in 1997 and released their first demo back in 1998. The band appeared on many compilations, including Metal Hammer Hungary- Power Hung(a)ry '99. Their first album, Deep Inside, distributed by Hammer Music Production sold quite well in Hungary. This album was distributed in Japan, USA and arrives here at metalreviews.com.

The band, playing a mixture of gothic/prog/thrash metal, is particular as two vocalists, male and female, are singing on Deep Inside. There is an extensive use of keyboards on Deep Inside and after a kaleidoscopic intro, Caleidoscope, Sands Of Time is interesting as the combination of gothic and thrash works better than expected. Even though ...

I and I confirms my first strange impression : sometimes you have the feeling to hear two separate bands, as the male vocals is used for the gothic parts and the thrash parts too (which is not the case for the female vocalist). I think the band still need to work hard on the song structure and the challenge will be to fully integrate the "thrashy part" inside their gothic metal. Otherwise, Without Face is a nice worm that might become a wonderful butterfly, but I think the band must loose quickly its Lacuna Coil influence first.

The production is good considering this is their first shot and the sound is well polished, which gives an extra dimension. Smart arrangements with refrains and catchy melodies will earn the listener from the first moment. The band has signed with Dark Symphonies (www.darksymphonies.com) and is currently working on their second album. Nice start, to be confirmed.

It's a long way to the top if you wanna rock 'n' roll ...
