If Meshuggah are to blame for anything, it's the constant waves of bands that are following the blueprint thew drew up years ago in terms of technical, "mathematical" metal. RXYZYXR (pronunciation pending) are no exception here but what they lack in vowels they make up for in songwriting and playing skills. Compared to some Meshuggah tracks the songs here actually sound like songs and feature more that on palm muted note played in various patterns and it's made clear from the first notes of Fractal Scout that the band are determined to stand out from the "djent" movement. At times they sound a bit like Blotted Science and there is an obvious Ron Jarzombek influence on the proceedings. Another notable difference is the production. As opposed to the usual fare that's trotted out with these sorts of bands the songs have a natural sound to them and when faced with wall upon wall of horrifically fake sounding drums and guitar tones this is a blast of fresh air that allows the band to stand out even if musically they aren't hugely different to the rest of the crowd. All of the songs give each of the band members time to show off a little, but they aren't hugely deep. A few more little additional background details like in Orgasmic Ceiling would've made things a bit more interesting to listen to but it's not a huge issue. The difference in the production for this track is however. It doesn't sound as clear as the rest for some reason and it's a shame.

At the moment the band are looking for a vocalist. I'm not entirely sure that they need one to be honest as they'd probably just get in the road of everything (compare the instrumental tracks from Bulb to Periphery's versions with vocals and you'll see what I mean). A few more details in the background to catch the listeners ears would probably serve them better in that way as they've definitely got the basics down to a tee. Hopefully they'll have more tracks out soon regardless of their member hunt.
