For those that do not know, Powerglove is fucking awesome. For those that do, very few words can be said. The words that would be most easily used are “Epic Video Game Metal”. There is nothing else. It is exactly what it sounds like, a bunch of dudes playing the theme song to Castlevania with blast beats and shreddage. They got internet famous for covers of Tetris, Power Rangers, Mario and everything else underneath the 8-bit sun.

They return now with Saturday Morning Apocalypse. There is one major change this time around however. Rather that taking a swing at video game themes, this time around they took on another time honored 90’s kid classic: The cartoon theme song.

Imagine an instrumental Dragonforce playing the theme song to The Flintstones. There is a ton of great material here and surprisingly enough isn’t just enjoyable do the gimmick factor which let’s be straight, this band is a gimmick. And that’s perfectly ok, because each musician masters their instrument making this a tight and thick sound. There is no reason why this band would not succeed creating originals and with a good vocalist they could surely crush this sterile landscape of a power metal scene into the ground.

But nope, they are just happy remixing songs they grew up with that people usually dismiss as kid stuff. And what’s wrong with kid stuff? Any man who can not be appreciative must turn up his nose at the very idea of nostalgia. It is all in good fun and takes the piss out of metal while still celebrating it.

In essence, the only way old Powerglove fans will be disappointed would be if they just never watched any of these shows. I know that I am not the only person who never watched The New Adventures of Johnny Quest, so there is probably a reason why it is my least played track.

But what tracks do I return to? X-Men is an obvious choice and kicks as much ass as one would expect. Batman, Transformers, etc. all make their way into the mix. My two favorite covers however came incredibly unexpected, one being a gnarly twist on Inspector Gadget. The other would be the Heffalumps and Woozles song from Winnie the Pooh. And you know what? It’s epic as shit.

That is right, Powerglove have made Winnie the Pooh more epic than anything Dimmu have done in years!

The only other real surprise is the appearance of Tony Kakko of Sonata Arctica on both The Simpsons and Pokemon theme songs. Nothing more need be said.

So if you had a childhood and that childhood took place in the 90’s then go and buy this album!
