This is the new project of Doug Pinnick (King's X) and Bruce Franklin (Trouble). Sounds like an old Kiss album actually. Not very melodic, rock'n'hard, 1 or 2 guitar notes for each song, a bit depressive and Supershine can be described as "the dark force" of Kiss. I've said dark not heavy. Those guys love the 70's and early 80's for sure. Some Black Sabbath atmosphere here and there combined also with some Blue Oyster Cult "melodies". I could bet this album was recorded in the 70's as Supershine will not impressed you with their "millennium sound". I have grown musically "end of 70's - beginning of 80's" so I have no problem with this type of nostalgic record or this type of sound. Songs are really good, even though this one looks like old Kiss, this one looks like Deep Purple, this one looks like Black Sabbath, this one looks like BOC. No copy-cat here ... but not very original, not enough personal. Supershine will not leave their "footprints" in the history of music, but if you are a fan of the above bands, it is a sure buy (if not a buy or die one). Now for those of you who are younger than me and have grown musically with Slayer, Immortal, Children Of Bottom or Hammerfall, I highly suggest you try before ! |
