darksoul7 annoys me but I will attempt to find samples, thanks. sludgy drone sounds to me like Bunkur, but I can hold out hope for a Boris..

np: Warning - The Strength to Dream

a lot like a dour, humourless Reverend Bizarre. still not sure whether I like this but I don't yet hate it..

np: super trad/stoner playlist of doooom

ps keeping track of genres is a pain the ass, look at the sort of lengths required:

sigh.. I'd use last.fm for this purpose so I could keep everything on CD but it just doesn't know enough doom.

you goth metal guys should start a thread and point out some decent starting bands for us. man, I'm totally clueless with goth metal, the only one I know I like is TON..

np: Abdullah - Abdullah

Stoner metal with a singer who sounds a lot like Maynard from Tool..

I've been thinking about this for some time now. As I see it, though, there are 2 problems:
First is that not many people here know much about this specific genre or are very interested in listening it. I myself for the past 2 years have heard no more than 4-5 gothic albums, mostly of bands that interest me. And I may be wrong but I see a general disgust towards gothic metal, particularly with all of the "I hate chick singers" comments.
The second problem is caused by the fact that on MR team there aren't any reviewers that favor this genre, as you favor and like mostly doom. So not much attention is brought to this genre. I remember Jack was covering most of the gothic albums before. What happened to him btw ?
So I think a thread like that would be very deserted and post-less.

After Forever - Remagine 2005 91 / 100
Angel - A Womans Diary - Chapter I 2005 78 / 100
Dark Tranquillity - Character 2005 97 / 100
Draconian - Arcane Rain Fell 2005 93 / 100
Green Carnation - The Quiet Offspring 2005 84 / 100
HIM - Dark Light 2005 75 / 100
Lacrimosa - Lichgestalt 2005 91 / 100
Morning - Hour Of Joy 2005 25 / 100
Octavia Sperati - Winter Enclosure 2005 75 / 100
Paradise Lost - Paradise Lost 2005 95 / 100
Tristania - Ashes 2005 85 / 100
Visions of Atlantis - Cast Away 2005 45 / 100

those are the gothic albums that have been reviewed in 2005 on MR
you can very well see that most of them have more than decent rates (except the ones in red)
so, I'm sure a lot of releases have been left out and, even if that interest little people here, it's your duty to tell us of any band/album scandalously forgotten...

I wasn't talking about bad scores given to gothic albums. And don't you think those are quite few.

Oh and from your list Stefan:

Visions Of Atlantis aren't gothic.

I'm not sure about Dark Tranquility but I don't consider them gothic.

Green Carnation is mostly affiliated with prog, but I'm talking from the MR reviews since I haven't listened to any GC album.

And Dee should say if Draconian are gothic. The songs i've heard are gothic for me, though.

And Angel simply sucked. :P

Draconian are romantic doom-death but very gothic too, I'd say you could include them in both genres.

and I see what you mean about under-representation of gothic metal, it has that Evanescense stigma to it which scares people away.

Are you sure that is all of the "gothic" albums reviewed here in '05? I'm sure Charon's Songs For The Sinners was reviewed, plus a few more.

The search tool doesn't bring out every gothic release. Besides there are some on that list that aren't even gothic.
