My theory is that since they became to personify and embody what was considered "The Gothenberg Sound" so much, the more they try to get away from that the farther they will fall. They sort of type-casted themselves in a sense.

On the other hand bands like Hypocrisy have alot more room to work with without falling under mass scrutiny., because no one is expecting such specific music out of them.

My theory is far less complex:
1. Tagtgren doesn't care that much about making a lot of money as Frieden does.
2. Hypocrisy were always a better band.

1. That's crap.
2. That's debatable.

so, tell me, what is Pain all about ? :?

I've never listened to Pain, so I don't know. I need to hear some of it soon though, because as far as I'm concerned, Peter is a god of metal!

It began very heavy, almost industrial black metal, but now it's very much like Rammstein. I like it.

Also, Tagtren just wrote a song for Liv Kristine's solo album. If you've ever heard her solo stuff it's like pop rock. Have you heard her new single? It's almost R&B, so if money didn't matter to Tagtren, why does he have his hand in so many cookie jars? Oh, right, because he's an artist...and Anders isn't, right?

Just check the site. It appears that on the new album—which I don't have yet—he's gone a little Nine Inch Nails. Still sounds good, though.

BYE/DIE
NOTHING
SAME OLD SONG

The dude is clearly talented as fuck.

I didn't say he doesn't care at all about money, I said he doesn't as much as Frieden. Besides, do you think one song for Liv Kristine will make him rich? And I'm not sure he makes a lot of money with Pain.
Anyway, this doesn't even matter. If he wants to try different stuff, even more commercial ones, fine. He had the decency to do not do it under the name of Hypocrisy. He can do whatever he wants with his free time, play hip-hop for all I care, the fact remains he didn't dumbed down his main band in order to make some cash.

@Eyesore: I can see where you're coming from with the In Flames/Hypocrisy rant, but when it's so well done (Virus) Melo-death seems quite enjoyable... a far better production and a far better vocalist = a BETTER album :) + the album seems a lot more cohesive and when listening to it, it doesn't constantly remind me of how better they were in their golden ages heheheh (In flames )

Well, like I said, quality isn't the issue. I personally like In Flames still and a lot of other people that used to like them do, as well. So it's all objective. It just makes me wonder if all of a sudden the Hot Topic crowd caught the Hypocrisy buzz...err...virus (haha...me so funny) would the opinion of the band change.

Don't get me wrong ... I also like In Flames nowadays...but recovering from the god-awfull SYTE is hard (There are 2-3 tracks on that album that are fine(especially live) but the whole package sucks) ... I've come to terms with R2R and CC is also pretty good. On another note, Eyesore, what do you think about Soilwork's STD ... IMO that is their SYTE, and again thoughts of how good they WERE constantly pop up in my mind, hehehe

P.S. maybe i'll start a new topic with STD, would like to get some other opinions on it

Stabbing the Drama blows.

I think Devin Townsend was able to capture their best moments. He was able to help them create something that was catchy, yet still heavy as hell. The band then tried to recreate that on their next two albums and they're simply not Devin Townsend. They didn't do a bad job, I like Figure Number Five and Stabbing The Drama, but they're nothing amazing.
