I don't like being hit with this "Metallica sucks and they always did" thing. I mean they've sucked unbelievably for the last 15 years after becoming inexplicably huge, but the quality to be found across their first four releases is great. Justice and Kill 'em All are both pretty uneven (and of course the production sucks on Justice), but Ride the Lightning and Master of Puppets remain two of my favourite albums no matter what anyone says.
I get the feeling if Metallica had not made the crossover into the mainstream their early releases would be much more fondly remembered.
The new album will suck though. It won't sound like St Anger, but it will suck.
I'm agreed with you, Radagast. Except that I like the Black album and think justice is great... But your middle paragraph is very true indeed. (And sadly I expect the last one as well)
Seeing as to how I enjoyed the Load albums, I do still have hope that Metallica will put out something worthwhile. Plus, their live shows are now better than ever so they do still have that little spark of metal left in them.
Regarding your middle paragraph, I definitely agree that this is true for some people. But I also think there are some people who are the exact opposite. People who, had Metallica's last few albums not been so critically panned, wouldn't be praising Master of Puppets and Ride The Lightning so much. It's almost like when the band's first four albums were released, they were reasonably popular. But once the Black Album and especially Load were released and slammed by fans, all of a sudden Metallica's first four albums were considered masterpieces. Almost like when a famous celebrity dies and he/she is somehow immortalized.
