Excuse me; I was off by two years.

My accurate comparison stands.

Meh...my point wasn't whether or not you think they suck. Name one band in the past 10 years that has come out and been so utterly original that you can't possibly pigdeonhole them into any genre or style?

The Mass, Devin Townsend, Kayo Dot, Maudlin of the Well, Ephel Duath
(lol I totally named 2 bands by the same guy ^^!!!)

Tool, Primus

EDIT: I suck at quotes =(

Inventiveness and originality are two different things. And I stand by my comment. George Foreman slapped his name on a very nifty invention, the thing is amazing, but it's not quite original. My comment stands.

I still think Kayo Dot are the most inventive band of the last 10 years...

'Cause you can't argue with flawlessly blending post rock, classical and death metal.

My questions where really rhetorical. I asked them to make a point. All these other bands mentioned are not mainstream, thus not really going against the point I was trying to make. Had The Beatles been more underground do you think they'd be considered what they are today? Doubtful.

There are likely tons of bands out there that are very original, just as much, if not more, that SOAD, but their impact is nil compared to SOADs.

I would still argue that Radiohead are a band whose commercial power and mainstream influence exceeds SOADs (at least in the UK market), whilst simultaneaously paying more adventurous music. But that is an isolated example. I agree that it is quite an achievement to reach the commercial levels SOAD have whilst playing the kind of music that they do.

I think I mentioned a few weeks ago that those are totally my thoughts of SOAD. I think that because of their popularity, a lot of the "metal elite" labeled them "nu-metal" - even though their music is totally different from what bands like Limp Bizkit and Linkin Park were putting out at the time. And yes, whether you may like them or not, you certainly can't deny the fact that there really isn't any band quite like them.

Interestingly enough, I listened to Toxicity just this morning in the car.

I totally agree that Radiohead is another example of an excellent group that's somewhat panned for their mainstream acceptance.

I wonder how many metal fans realize hating everything that's popular is just as stupid as hating everything that isn't popular.

Primus never really became enormously popular with the mainstream... As much as I like them, I wouldn't really call them a mainstream band.

Just how good is SOAD?

Not very. Don't believe the hype, for that's all it is, hype.

What he said, I just hear the bastard child of Mr.Bungle and numetal when I listened to them... then again I've only heard like 1 or 2 of their songs 1 or 2 times.

And as for the making mainstream... well good for them I guess, doesn't really make them any more enjoyable to listen to.

Fine with me.

I'm going to go listen to Age of Silence, or maybe Tool, or maybe Obscura-era Gorguts. If I'm bored, maybe some Pelican.

Old SOAD = weird hardcore
new SOAD = weird folkcore

They're still interesting for me, just took a while to get used to.

I remember when Kid A was like number 1 on the charts! Who woulda thunk it? Great band, though!

I heard that godforsaken 'choking chicks and sodomy' song in the pub again last night. :x Arrgh it just makes me so angry.

Good. Then come back and write a report on their impact on the musical landscape. You can call the report "Nil."

Yep. That song annoys the piss out of me. That's what happens when the poet doesn't write the lyrics. That song has good parts, but that line if so repetitive I usually skip it. It's just juvenile, which is why you hear the fucking song in pubs because people are retarded! Serj should write the lyrics, you may not understand them all, but they don't come off as something a 7th grader would write.

...Tool had no impact on the musical landscape? This is new.

The other three, I'll accept.

Heck, why don't you write me a report on SoaD's impact on the musical landscape. That report can be called 'Sales And Not Much Else.'
