Post subject: Lamb of God - Ashes In The Wake
PostPosted: Sun Dec 11, 2005 4:03 pm
I just listened to this album today. To be honest, I'm underwhelmed. After hearing so much critical fanfare and praise for this band, I was expecting to be blown away by them. Don't get me wrong, they're not at all a bad band. But I just didn't really find anything special about them.

May be the way All Music labeled them "Shock Rock" turned me off to them (Shock Rock - pointless one dimensional rock music). But I think it may also be that I've heard it all before. Pantera/Machine Head riffs with slightly higher guitar tuning, the usual death metal vocals, a sound reminiscent of World Needs A Hero-era Megadeth.

I will listen to the album again sometime, and may be even buy it, because I do think it may grow on me eventually. But so far, I'm not impressed.

Ashes is a grower.

The riffs are much more thrash than Machine Head and Pantera were. I keep thinking 'math-metal structures meet Slayer riffing.'

I don't see how they sound much like WNAH-era Megadeth.

They bore me. All I hear is chug-chug-squeal or chug-chug-dun in like all of their riffs =\. And their singer is boring beyond words.

LoG is awesome, but AotW is their weakest IMO.

I think they are ok, but the singer in all aspects really annoys me for some reason.

Alright for what it is. Better than most of the commercial metalcore shit out there.

Not a fan of the production on this album. It makes the guitar work sound terrible.

I can't even begin to tell you guys how much this album has grown on me in time. But it requires a lot of spins to like and I don't get why ? It's not complex or anything... :?

I wonder that as well. There seem to be three phases to AoTW:

1. Surface reaction: "Woo, this is cool shit!"
2. Boredom: "Eh, I heard it all before..."
3. Click! "WOW! I never realized how amazing this was..."

But, for example in the Dio to play dr. x thread it's like me replying "I like Dio."
