Having heard a lot of good things about this band's last album (Leviathan). I was wondering what the general consensus was. All I know about them so far is that Leviathan was based on Moby Dick.

A metal album based on Moby Dick. How cool is that? 8)

Well... Hit I suppose but not an enthusiastic Hit... These polls need a "maybe".

Hit. Leviathan was pretty good progressive sludge, and the little I've heard of Remission was good as well.

Too much hardcore in their music, for me, but that track Hearts Alive was absolutely amazing. I'd love them to do an entirely instrumental album..

Miss. The band has it's moments, but overall I'm not a fan.

A massive hit for me. Amazing guitarwork and song structures. Don't mind the hardcore elements, they are not overpowering.

Hit, for the drumming alone. Actually I do like them, but the vocals grate a little. I love their more progressive, melodic stuff.

Miss. Only some good moments. I agree with the drumming, it's pretty good, the drummer has become more famous than the band itsself.

Haha, forgot to vote.

You're a mod, can you rig the poll so we can bring down the evil empire?

I didn't vote because I'm neutral. They're OK to listen to, but theres stuff like Swarm of the Lotus (check them out!) that are basically in the same style but better. IMO Mastodon are an above average metalcore band who have a lot of potential but as far as I have heard have not realised it.

BTW Brann Dailor's old band Lethargy is a *great* "mathcore" or whatever you want to call it (it's in the style of Dillinger Escape Plan, though not as abrasive or ecccentric). It showcases his true drumming skills much better than anything Mastodon has ever done. And the singing/guitarwork sort of reminds me of Mastodon (i haven't listened to Mastodon in a while though, so I might be totally wrong), but much more jazzy and technical.

And Lethargy have their whole discography released in one convenient 2 disc package!!!

EDIT: Cool, apparently their new album is thrashier + more progresive... might be something to look out for

Not bad stuff but vastly over-rated and over-hyped IMHO

They're not metalcore at all. Archives has them down as Progressive sludge/metal ,and since they won't accept anything core-like (even grindcore  ), they must be right.

Yeah but we all know the Archives operates on the principle that they have rules set in place that cannot be changed...unless one of the admins feels like it.

Hence Mortiis, the Emperor bootleg, etc

Still, I agree, Mastadon just aren't Metalcore. The vocals are Hardcore, but thats all.

I have heard alot of good things about the band but i personaly dont like them.

The extent of my hearing them is on uranium so this is, more than likely, a bad example of the band. I dislike hardcore vocals so much that their a deal breaker for me. Miss

on the topic of hardcore vocals, have any of you guys heard the song "so real to me" by diecast. Io got it on a sample and i laugh my balls off every time i hear it.

I guess I'll call them a below average sludge metal band then =\

I tend to use metalcore very broadly, I try to stop but it's hard =[

Hit. They are absolutely 100% not metalcore. The only thing I find slightly off putting is the vocals, but the guitar and drum sound kicks ass. Leviathan was one of last year's best.
