Hit. "Abbey Road" is by far my favorite, although I like most of the others as well, "Revolver" and "Help" especially. I didn't care much for "Sgt. Peper" and I haven't heard the "White Album" in its entirety though.

I do like a fair bit of the earlier stuff, but I admit that I do have to be a little more in the mood for it to enjoy it. While not as experimental as what they'd do later, the stuff they put out early on was more advanced and simply better than just about everything else at the time. Then it really got good around '65 or so as T.I.E. said..

I also think Ringo was a better drummer than he's generally given credit for.

I'm not going to vote because I haven't listened to enough of their songs to form a real opinion. This, however, is because the stuff I have heard hasn't made me want to listen to them in any depth.

I recognise that they were innovators, but I think they are generally given too much credit for shaping modern music when you consider what bands like The Who and The Kinks were doing around the same time.

Agreed, but I think part of the credit lies in The Beatles being more popular and more rooted in pop (and pop/experimental) music than rock (I'm not saying they weren't also rock, however). Someone else mentioned the Rollings Stones earlier as well, which I think were more rock. The Stones and the Who had more "edge" to their sound, and so I think the influence comparisons may depend on what style of modern music we're talking about.

In some ways, I think the Beatles earlier material was more important and influential than the later stuff, particularly based on what else was going on in pop/rock music at the respective times.

the thing is, IMO, The Bealtes didn't need to be an "all rock" band to produce about the best rock songs of their era...

just a few :
- Come Together
- I Want You (She's So Heavy)
- Helter Skelter
- Birthday
- Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band (reprise) (perfectly covered by Jimi Hendrix on the very day they released the album)
- I Am The Walrus
etc...

The Stones produced a few classics but a lot of garbage too... as for The Who, they were the most underrated band of that time, sure, but not as good as the Beatles (though they had the chance to continue improving their art in the 70's...). Who's Next, for instance, is an absolute classic every music lover should possess and cherish ! :D

huge hit, and like Dead Machine I favour Magical Mystery Tour, especially Blue Jay Way which is just spectacular. I'm not a huge fan of the White Album though which is kinda odd; it's just too silly, to me, and I can like psychedelia..

This is a big Miss for me. Although I enjoy a lot of The White Album, and a few songs off other albums (like Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Heart Club Band and I Am the Walrus because they're just so silly that it works), but I really can't stand most of the music they've written.

The Beatles old poppy stuff bores the hell out of me, and Abbey Road and the White Album don't do it for me either. I guess Sgt. Pepper is pretty good though. I'll take the Doors, the Who and the Moody Blues if were are talking the 60s.

I'm not voting in this poll because I'm very neutral with The Beatles. I myself am not really a big fan, but I can certainly respect them as musicians and for the impact they had on rock music throughout the last 40 years.

On a side note, did any of you notice the word "Beatles" is actually a pun?

Never was a big fan, although I basically grew up hearing them- I was an infant when they first came to the US. Yet, though, I can respect them. My 6th grade Health and PE teacher hated them for making long hair on males fashionable again.
