I recognise that they were innovators, but I think they are generally given too much credit for shaping modern music when you consider what bands like The Who and The Kinks were doing around the same time.
Agreed, but I think part of the credit lies in The Beatles being more popular and more rooted in pop (and pop/experimental) music than rock (I'm not saying they weren't also rock, however). Someone else mentioned the Rollings Stones earlier as well, which I think were more rock. The Stones and the Who had more "edge" to their sound, and so I think the influence comparisons may depend on what style of modern music we're talking about.
In some ways, I think the Beatles earlier material was more important and influential than the later stuff, particularly based on what else was going on in pop/rock music at the respective times.

the thing is, IMO, The Bealtes didn't need to be an "all rock" band to produce about the best rock songs of their era...
just a few :
- Come Together
- I Want You (She's So Heavy)
- Helter Skelter
- Birthday
- Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band (reprise) (perfectly covered by Jimi Hendrix on the very day they released the album)
- I Am The Walrus
etc...
The Stones produced a few classics but a lot of garbage too... as for The Who, they were the most underrated band of that time, sure, but not as good as the Beatles (though they had the chance to continue improving their art in the 70's...). Who's Next, for instance, is an absolute classic every music lover should possess and cherish !
